Who goes on Pettersson's line to protect him?

Pettersson's protector should be the very best in the league that can  be traded for, Gretzky had Seminko/McSorley, Yzerman had Probert/McCarty, Lemieux had Stevens, McDavid got Lucic/Maroon, Gradin had Smyl/Fraser, Bure had Gino, Ronning had Momesso, Bossy had Gilles/Nystrom and Dennis the menace, Orr had well they had to hold him back ditto with Howe.

There have always been "protectors" for the best players in the league.

Trade for Lucic or Reeves.

Good post.  Said it earlier that Lucics value is high given McDavid can rest easy knowing Lucic has his back (the entire team for that matter).  There is absolutely no way the league will keep the players in check given they know nobody scary is waiting for them in the alleys of the rink after they cheap shot someone...Roenick said having Probert in CHI made him feel two feet taller...Gretzky still speaks with reverence over the guys that kept him safe, couldn’t imagine how many points Crosby would have if he had the same thing available to him (he was on pace to score 140 the year Daniel won the Art Ross and then was concussed for 1.5 seasons that January).

The league is going small, fast and skilled in their drafting, trying to suspend guys for taking what for 120 years was a perfectly legal check like instead they  two handed swung their stick at their head, but it’s never going to work.  Cut through the middle with your head down then your at least partially responsible for the consequences (just as Kariya).  Richard scored his most epic goal after getting creamed, didn’t pass on the way to the net because he couldn’t tell who was who, went in a scored a series winner, blood trickling down his face led to the second most famous hockey photo ever shaking the bruins hands after the game.

What in the world is going on with hockey these days?  Trying to turn it into a speed race with sub-six footers and nobody there to protect them because nobody will need to because nobody will hit them or misbehave because if you do they will get a phone call, then a game off, then five games then twenty?  Has concussions scared the legal department that much or the negative optics of the end of the enforcers?  When the best of the best praise them and say there is room for them in the game and they play an important role shouldn’t they listen!  Or is it going to take a career ending injury for them to WAKE the f$@k up.

Like another poster said a little earlier, Zack McEwan just might fit the bill. He is big and has an imposing presence on the ice ( and can also score ). When he gets pissed, he has a real temper. He destroyed some guy in preseason (I forget who it was) . It was impressive. He just looks like a guy you don't want to mess with. I say call him up and put him out there as a policeman for "The Wizard" Pettersson.

Of course it's about the hit. And who should be on his line is included in several threads about the hit already.

And yes this is just another reactionary thread. At this rate the entire front page will be repetitive reactionary threads.

This is a good learning experience for EP as well, this stuff happens all the time and he knows that now. Thankfully the injury isn't too bad.

Jake - at the end of the day he can keep up with Petty. He doesn't fight because he probably has been told to not to take dumb penalties. What happens last night if he fought right away, we probably get the instigating call and end up short handed...

theres a time to take a penalty and not . Yes I wish someone did step up for him, but the dude will soon gain another 10lbs and then be hitting people himself :P

You are right, he tends to back away.  But this is his opportunity to man up and grow up.  He has the physical size and strength to protect EP.

If Green makes it clear to him this is his job, then you might see Jake evolve as a player and show he can be a larger presence.

This will never happen again in the NHL. No coach will ever make it clear that it’s a players job to fight, from now on in the NHL.

With liability and concussions enforcers have gone the way of the dodo.

the game is too skilled for knuckle dragers anyhow.

Gradin had Smyl/Fraser,

Two guys that weren't afraid to drop the gloves and in Fraser's case - a feared fighter.

The thing is, Gradin was no girly-man who could also dish it out if provoked  (skip to about the 4 minutes/40 second mark):

Rousell would be a good choice. Veteran presence with a meaner side. I would also like Jake, but I think Green will want to keep a vet on EP40’s wing.

Eriksson can play on Sutters line.

Either way Goldy needs to play with EP40 and they need a guy that can push back.

This momment should have everyone in Canuck land paying attention.
