A career KHL’er, a rookie and a player who just had knee surgery.

Don’t get too excited yet!

Lots of potential but lots of moving parts, too.  Plus, you need a lot of skill to out-skill the East.

Still, Devils are pretty young so even if it doesn't come together this year they're looking up.

Nice spin you put on it there. Here’s a different view:

the best player in Russia last year, the first overall pick, and a hart trophy winner in his prime.

dont get too excited yet!

Gonna look like a steal very soon! I’m a little disappointed Benning didn’t work the cap space a little better with some trades and simply RFA offersheet Gusev and get him away with only a 2nd round compensation. I would have done that. Gusev probably gets 60 points next season.

Feels like the Blues, looks ridiculously good on paper, but might need some time to gel.

The guy possesses a high-end skill set. He put up better stats than Panarin did before he came over. The likelyhood of Gusev translating that to the NHL is pretty good. I have very little doubt he comes over and makes a noticeable impact right away.

The Devils were the third worst team last year and are throwing picks around on players in their late-ish 20's and early-ish 30's to make them a better team today.  If the Canucks did this it would be met with outrage. I'm not even criticizing the moves but it's strange how differently things are perceived when they happen to another team.

How?

You really dont think being able to draft Hischier and Hughes made a huge difference?

Benning traded a pretty similar package for a PROVEN nhl top 9 forward (at worst) and 50 point producer. Gusev has proven exactly nothing yet other than he feels entitled to a big contract.

Just another example of what the Canucks could've done if they did a better job of accumulating assets and managing their cap space.

Except for the fact that there was no way Gusev was going to be moved to a team in the same division as Vegas.

Jersey won the lottery drafted Hischier

Jersey won the lottery drafted Hughes.

Jersey won the lottery traded a meh 4-5 defensemen for a 1st line winger on any team in the league.

Jersey was effectively given a free ride on the penalty for the Kovalcash situation,

Canucks had...how much of that luck?

Two very very different teams with very different paths to get to where they are now over the last 10 years.

Canucks lost their respective lottery 4 times.  Drafted worse than Jersey because of it, did better overall than Jersey because of it for their respective draft status.  Was slapped with the lounge recapture while Jersey got away with their cap penalty issue.

Added of course that nobody complaining about this ever considers maybe Vegas had no desire to trade within their own division but hey.

Why let facts get in the way of an anti Benning rant

This.

NHL gets away with screwing over the Canucks with impunity as FA remains powerless against the other elite owners.

Imagine if the Canucks had won the lotteries in their respective years.

2016 we're drafting Matthews.  Almost won that draft if I recall

2017 we're hopefully still drafting Petersson

2018 We're in on Dahlin

2019 hell we won Hughes

If we win any 2 of those drafts add a first line winger like Hall for the cost of a less defensive Tanev and don't get hit with the Luongo recapture we're ridiculously wealthy.  But we didn't win.  We didn't get that sweet gift from the league.  We didn't have a chiarelli to trade with.

I honestly like where we're sitting myself, Gusev would have been nice but no chance he's getting traded to us
