We would’ve better off not trading for Gudbranson in the first place. At least a better (granted not great but still far better than Gaudette in that role) 3C at a cheaper cap hit than Pearson. And he had to manage in an era where there was no cap *BUT* we didn’t have ownership that had the financial ability to operate like one of the big spenders in the league. Guys like Burke/Nonis and Gillis had the ability in certain stages. They don't make them like the big Irishman anymore though. Burke's the closest we'll get.
JM_
These discussions never lead to much, unless we decide at the outset what "asset management" means and put some context to it. We can't even decide as a group on how long the rebuild has been. 3

He is the one paying the bills. Of course he'll want his stamp on the team. It's unrealistic to think otherwise.

AK_19
I've been pretty down on Benning since the off-season but this is a childish take on his performance. 1

I don't think Jim will be leaving hockey for a job in International diplomacy, but to call him dishonest is ridiculous. One of the worst takes yet. Didn't JB just say he's relying on his analytic department and video for the draft just a week ago? Like this poster just learned what oppurtinity costs were and decided right away that JB wouldn't is mystifying. I get that not every deal makes sense. On Myers. He was on of the better RHD's we've seen come to market in awhile...glad he made that call and not one of the dozen or so trade BB threads for Dumba or whomever last season. And that was with Myers on the team already. Also left out the fact that other teams were also in the running and he left money/term on the table coming here because of his BC summer roots. Just ridiculous stuff. And at the end something about just making him and executive. He is THE executive right now. President and GM...what's he supposed to become? Childish indeed. None of us has all the data. Something that's happened frequently enough over the past many years is, fans are ready to launch themselves of cliffs over minor and major moves or non moves. Faced a ton of flak for letting everyone go to CAL .... and recently getting dumped on for covid too lol. It's brutal really. Where he was ranked last season by his peers is pretty close to where he deserves to be. None of his peers managed a cup with their kids on their ELC's with the exception of CHI Toews last season. It simply doesn't happen often because it's extremely difficult to gauge when it might happen. For that yes he screwed the pouch. Better to actually have that problem then not to have it at all, which is Detroit was Mantha, Bertuzzi and Larkin, EDM x 2 with Hall, Eberle, RNH etc, Buffalo, ARI x 2 now, and CAR x 2 managed a great run, then slipped a step and now are looking like a contender. The x is the number of rebuilds by the way. If your going to pick on JB, the rest of the league needs to be used a barometer. 2
Popular Post aGENT
First, to the OP @Top Sven Baercheese /article writer, asset management is part of a GM's job. Building a team is the actual job. 2 hours ago, The.Burrowers said: This year has been a disaster. For me it isn't so much that we had an off year....I get it. However, the '2 years away' comments were a huge F you to fans and really off-putting. The time to win a cup and build a great team was now with Hughes/Petto/Boeser/Horvat/Miller on bargain deals. We should have been surrounding them with excellent veteran support....not the likes of Sutter, Eriksson, Beagle, Roussel, Luongo Recapture....Pearson....etc.... so much dead weight. This isn't all JB's fault obviously. He is working with a stubborn ownership group and inherited the Luongo ordeal .... However, the fact remains that other teams like the Leafs and Lightning have managed to shed dead weight when they need to. Jim has signed and traded for A LOT of bad contracts that have not improved this team. CDC has stood by for too long and not called him out on this BS. The poor asset management at the TDL (Gaudette for nothing???) was really confusing to me. Hate to break it to a portion of this fan base but this team isn't going to be a contender until Pettersson and Hughes are in their primes and guys like Juolevi, Rathbone, Podkolzin, Hoglander, Lind, Woo etc, etc have more miles under their skates. An extra $5m or whatever of cap space this year wasn't changing that. Horvat and Boeser are really our only 'kids' that are remotely ready to contend. And Boeser, really only as of this year. Hence the "two years" quote. That doesn't mean we can't be a good, competitive or playoff team those two years FYI. Also, none of the 'overpaid vets' were particularly the problem with the lineup this year. We struggled to integrate new guys due to a lack of preseason/early season practice time, Miller missed the first couple weeks (and has looked frustrated at times), young players like Gaudette and Virtanen both fell off cliffs while key players in Hughes and Pettersson both struggled to replicate their play from last year (likely not helped by all the aforementioned issues). Getting Highmore (useful, cheap, under contract player who better fits our bottom 6 needs) for a highly devalued (poor play, not ED exempt) Gaudette also isn't 'nothing'. Nothing would have been what we'd have gotten letting him walk in the summer. Edited April 17, 2021 by aGENT 1
CanuckleHorse
Yes the next Gm will be able to give up nobody’s for stars and talk players into taking less also get players waving their No trade clause to go where they don’t want to 1

Yet, his aversion to acquiring draft capital. Bizarre. Picking at the top of each round is probably statistically verifiable to “produce talent”, which is where his cap teams have finished. I think it’s critical to remember why he was picking high, not what he did once he fell there.

If Gillis didn’t leave completely bare cupboards maybe he’d be farther ahead. 1
