lol? he definite mishandled the contract.. because of all the crippling contracts he gave up we were unable to take advantage of EP Hughes ELC all the contracts he gave up like candy could have been used to take advantage of the small window last year and this year to field a competitive team on the ice.. imagine having competent players for the 18mil worth of dead contracts that provides nothing saddling the team not including the luongo recapture? we would actually been able to re-sign toffoli sign some competent top 4 defenseman and who knows maybe we could have been the habs this year as it was a super easy path to get to the conference final in this division we were in. but nah we have 18mil worth of useless plugs that would be coming off the books in a year or 2 when we *MIGHT* be competitive but prolly more than half of those are going to hughes ep boeser... if the plan was to continue rebuild for another couple years then why the hell did we trade for miller?????? he'll be 30+ in 2 years usually when people starts to decline.. we traded for him so that he'll likely be declining when we are competitive?? baffles me ppl think this was all going according to plan and they were planning to continue rebuilding for couple more years..and signing holtby to that big 4+mil x2 contract is part of the plan to rebuild? guy haven't even had a good save percentage in 3 years so we signed him to a massive overpaid contract just to expose him to seattle who more than likely won't take him? lol admit it he mishandled his contract literally every year he's been here.

Imagine not having COVID and the cap going up. WOOOAH that would be pretty wild. Cant imagine what it would be like with the inevitable and foreseeable effects of COVID a few years ago… jeez that 84-88mil salary cap increase that everyone was expecting suuure would have been nice. Its too bad JB mishandled all these contracts 2-3 years ago before COVID. He should have seen it coming .

IDK IF YOU NOTICED BUT WE HAVE NO VETERAN GOALIE TO LEAD AND HELP DEMKO. DERP. ITS A 2 YEAR F***ING DEAL. Do you want to ruin the development of DiPietro and just toss him in behind Demko? Or perhaps ruin the mental stability of Demko when he begins to struggle and has no one to look around to? It also conveniently can be left exposed at the ED if we really want to let him go possibly. The Kraken will need a starting goalie after all and one that comes at a decent cap….. 4.3mil for 1 year for a cup winning goalie. Oh I should also mention a Vezina and Jennings winning goalie.

Lmao you want JB to take advantage of a small window, to what, re-sign the same failed group last year who were no match for Vegas, just to do it all again and win another round maybe? Only to meet our biggest issue again in the playoffs?
Idk what part of a rebuild you dont understand. The part where it takes several years, or the part where ours turned around 2 years after the Sedins.
The “poor” UFA signings like Beagle Roussel etc were in 2018-19. Just going by a little logic here, but 2018-19 is the first season without the Sedins, the first year without the Sedins = rebuild

FA TWEETED the rebuild in july 2018 and said it is a long slow process and we want everyone united through the process. We signed those poor contracts IN TOO THOWSAND ATE TEEN. The start of the rebuild, WE SOMEHOW turned it around in the 2nd year, thanks to JB’s drafting of Petey, Hughes and Boeser all making instant impacts. We took advantage of TBL and squeezed a good player out of them for a decent price. And woah what do you know we made the f***ing playoffs, not just made the playoffs but we EARNED a playoff spot by winning the play in round. Take the blinders off bud. We acquired Toffoli feb 17th, March came and COVID hit. Mid march the cap was still expected to go up, July the announcement was made that the cap would remain flat. NOT ANYONES FAULT AND NOT A CIRCUMSTANCE ANYONE IN THE WORLD SAW COMING.

Quit sippin on the hateorade and take a bite of reality.

You dont typically win on ELCs, its in the RFA years you win. Thankfully we can take advantage of Hoglander and Podkolzins ELCs and our 9th this season if we choose to keep it.

Look at tampa mother f***ing bay… took them 11 years to win after drafting Stamkos, then Hedman and Kucherov, Vasilevskiy, BP was drafted 6 years ago. ALLL OF their top players are IN their RFA and UFA deals. Its thanks to the 3rd wave of the ELCs that they managed to win with Sergachev, Cirelli and Cernak on ELCs

Kuch, Stammer, Hedman, Vas, BP all drafted 6-11 years ago. Take Kucherov out of the group, are they winning a cup last year? Probably not.

Take BP out this year, are they winning a cup? Probably not. Take Vasilevskiy out for either year, are they winning a cup? Definitely not.

it Baffles me to think you believe COVID was part of the plan and Benning could see it coming and poorly played his cards 3 years in advance. EL OH EL

Our dollar is 20% less than the US green back.  Players are paid in US funds.  If the player lives here, he has 20% more purchase power.  Simply don’t overpay guys on their RFA contracts.  And if a guy will not sign here for the same dollar as a low tax state, then we don’t want him, because he’s not committed to being here.  That’s what the Twins were talking about in their recent interview.  We want guys who are committed to be here.

But how about the tax free states…. Its a huge advantage for them is it not?? Best weather all year round, babes in bikini’s 365, beautiful beaches, tax free, who the f**k would wanna go live somewhere cold, dark and wet 2/3 of the year and watch their paycheque get cut in half but have more buying power in a higher tax area, which kinda takes away that “buying power” Vancouver and Toronto are extremely pricey to live. Your $5,000,000 mil house in Cali or FLA is like $20,000,000 here. I dont think its alllll about money, its also where you want to live and i think 99% of people would rather live where its sunny and theres beaches rather than snow for half the year and rain. A house that costs you 1/4 of the price in the states and is probably 3-4 times bigger property. Problem is if the good players want to sign in the low tax states with the great weather, we only attract the mediocre guys who want to play hockey. Idk maybe im wrong, but i think there needs to be a change to the salary cap for the tax discrepancies between state to state, border to border.

Holtby at this stage of his career, isn't even a passable backup goalie let alone starting goalie.

heh, like some Vancouver team got kind of close last year (though we weren't exactly a defense first team, just a team with not just one goalie but two hot goalies).

We don’t want players who would prefer to be elsewhere.  Plus, in many of those US cities guns are everywhere.  Lots of turmoil in their society.  Way safer here.

The big issue with the Laff’s core, is 4 of them take up nearly 50% of the cap. Thats a very small core, that doesnt even include a dman or a goalie. The problem with Jumbo Joe is he isnt a 200ft player and doesnt provide much grit at all. Simmonds has never been much of a 200ft player either. Spezza has played very well in their bottom 6. Montreal signed gritty 200ft players that also drive the net. Thornton is a perimeter set up guy, Spezza drives the net off the rush, but he’s also kinda one of those guys who would rather move around the wall, back of the net and circle the high slot than be right in the goalies kitchen. Theyve been skill guys who have either scored off the rush or set up plays their entire career.. Spezza has been able to adapt to a different style later in his career, but still tends to work around the perimeter, Simmonds goes to the net, but hes pretty bad defensively.
Staal and Perry on the other hand are 200ft players and drive the net, Perry has made a career of being a pain in the arse for goalies and Staal has been good at providing screens. I’d say Toronto needs more Spezzas, Thornton is not a bottom 6 guy.

YES YES AND YES TO THE TAX DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MARKETS NEEDING A F***ING CHANGE OMG F*** THAT.
TBL can sign a 12m player for 8-9m same with FLA VGK DAL because of the the no tax states they are in. This pisses me off so f***ing much. A buddy and I were talking and he suggested a really good idea that the NHL salary cap should be calculated on their take home value, not the total salary, to make it fair for all teams. Or  what I suggest is that the non-tax or lower tax states should all have their own salary caps and it should be pro-rated to be the same % to the rest of the market. Like TBL should have a 62-65m  cap hit

Kucherov is one of the best players in the league, makes 9.5m and only accounts for 11.7% of the cap.
McDavid takes up 15.3% with a 12.5m cap hit.
9.5mil is 15.3% of 62mil.

therefore if these tax free states had their own separate cap hit that was pro-rated to be on par with the rest of the league it would make it fair for all NHL teams. I really hate how this has not been addressed and not enough teams have b*tched and complained for equality.

Good take !

Imo, the tax discrepancy between teams will only widen moving forward cause some of these provinces/states are in trouble.  At this point, the model of having (so called) small market teams (like Tampa) being able to win/compete for a cup is working and it makes the league look good - these reason are perhaps the leagues biggest reasons for not taking this issue on cause at the end of the day most high tax jurisdiction like Vancouver, Toronto and NY are still making boat loads of money; whereas, teams like Tampa or Arizona and so on - its either feast or famine. Imo, it only takes one of big market team to start making a big stink to get the snowball rolling (imagine the PR nightmare of the Haves vs the Have nots) cause some of these states/province are not doing too well and it is just a matter of time before the bottom line of these big market teams starts getting affected.

My main point about, ex first line players is, that they are able to provide more value on the ice - only if they are willing to accept the role and willing to sign a short & cheap deal to win with a young core. With hindsight, JB (moving forward) can perhaps look into this strategy as a short term solution to fill the mid to bottom six of the roster, if the youths are not ready to play those (hard) minutes. Imo, the best way to bring in the youths is to play them with legit minutes and showcase them for the fans as a treat - these young players are hungry and giving them a short leash (as Green tends to do) hinders there development with the team cause it forces them to play cautiously to get minutes; unless (ofcourse) the player does an EP or Hogz (as a more recent example): by earning the spot & minutes from day one and removing the option to sit him away from Green.

Imo, if JB was able to acquire McD - the team would still struggle to win unless the goaltending is good to elite due to the system & deployment that Green & friends were implementing.  If you look at the teams that made the conference finals, the staff has a good mix of old with the new on their staff (the new being an ex NHL player that played a loooong time in the NHL: Richardson (Habs) or Zettler (Tampa) or Shaw vs the Baumer types); i am really looking forward to what Shaw can do with this roster.

Jacob Markstrom says hi. He was a highly touted up and coming tendie who got shipped off, struggled immensely and took forever to develop into a starting goalie. It wasnt that long ago that he was battling for the net with Anders Nilsson and it was a coin toss as to who would start and who could actually stop the first shot on net. JM is 31 and only 3 months younger

Holtby can still rebound from this season. How much time has he had to work with Clark due to COVID? Look at Fleury, Luongo, Smith, Craig Anderson these guys all played very well late into their careers. Mike Smith had insane numbers a .923sv% at 39 years of age. Craig Anderson was still a true #1 goalie at 35, he had a .926sv%

Pekka Rinne

Ben Bishop

Carey Price

Marc-Andre Fleury - lost the net multiple times.

Tuuka Rask

Mike Smith

Henrik Lundqvist

Semyon Varlomov

Cam Talbot*
Anton Khudobin

Darcy Kuemper

Most of these goalies are older than Holtby and are starting goalies or solid 1a 1b tandems. Other goalies on this list prove that goalies, like dmen can be highly successful as they get older. Defense and goaltending rely on excellent positioning to be effective. Goalies are always forever improving rebound control and that is something that comes with age and experience, they no longer need to rely on the crazy athletic saves to stop the puck. They read the play, position themselves and stop the puck with control. Vasilevsky is an unreal goalie, but right now he is a human highlight reel of insane athletic saves, twisting and contorting. His positioning and movement is leaving him in a terrible position to make an unreal save.

if you go to hockey-reference.com and go to TBL. Look up the e +/- stat. Every single player on TBL is an expected minus player, yet they are all plus players. Thats a strong indication that 1) Vasilevsky is saving their bacon and 2) Vas is making saves that are well above the league average and are typically not possible to stop.

Dont get me wrong, Vas is an elite goalie, but its his athleticism, not his foundation that is making him exceptional. Its only a matter of time before he runs into hip issues and groin issues like Lou and Schneider. In a few years his athleticism will not be enough to make up for positioning,

If Holtby isnt taken at the ED, give Clark some time to actually work with the guy. They have had very little time since Holtby arrived to get acquainted.

Holtby has a Cup, Jennings and Vezina in his career.

He’s been voted for the Hart 3 times and the Vezina 3 times. He placed 4th 10th and 18th in Hart trophy votes, Vezina he finshed 1st 2nd and 4th in Vezina votes. He’s far from a long shot, hes already proved things in the NHL, he needs some tweaking and for all we know the guy could be battling a hip problem. Maybe some r&r and some time with Clark and he can find his game again.

Clark doesn't have a flux capacitor & DeLorean car.  He can't reverse the effects of age.  There's only so much a goalie coach can do to a 30+ year old goalie.  Markstrom says what?  He was 23 years old at the time we acquired him.  HUGE difference in terms of what good coaching can do.  Brendan Gaunce working under Trotz isn't going to make that former Canuck into a NHLer.

We'll just have to agree to disagree.

Ummmmm Ian Clark was with CBJ for the majority of Markstroms career bud. He came back to Van in 2018…. Look at Markstroms age and his sv% in 2019-20. Look at the years prior to Clark arriving. i just laid it all out for you. Please read it.

Ian Clark can correct Holtby’s foundation to give better positioning and rebound control. Its not a matter of age being an issue its the fundamentals that need to be reworked. That way Holtby doesnt need to rely on athleticism to make saves outside of his fundamentals. Look at Carey Price, he is positioned very well that he controls rebounds and is in the right position to swallow up the next shot and take away angles. He doesnt need to make drastic saves on a nightly basis, he utilizes his fundamentals and when there is that odd chance, he can use athleticism to recover. Vas is making countless highlight reel saves because he is finding himself further out of position making the first big save. He has good fundamentals but his athleticism is making up for errors and overplaying the shot

You can follow Ian Clarks history of where he’s been and what hes done. He left Van in 2010 and returned in 2018. Markstrom was in Van from 2013 to 2020

My friend is a Habs fan so I hope that now that they are in the Final they win . As a Canuck fan I want the Canucks to build a team that will compete year after year not "one&done " . Had that in the early 80's

A lot of things have gone right for the habs since the playoffs started . All lower talented teams that get this far need that and the best teams need to stay healthy most of all . I have No idea what happens to Vegas , they hit a good goalie and there forwards disappear ?

Question ,,would you rather win the Cup once [ knowing they will probably not win it again in your lifetime ] or have a top team that is one of the favorites. completes for it for the next dozen years . I am old now but I would still like to see a competing team every year that entertains me and hopefully wins one

We've had a number of threads emerge from some team's collapses..(no, won't bother ranting more on the negative). Indeed, am a lil' lazy this morn, but figure this is worthy discussion/analysis.

Our team is mostly young, with many contracts petering out. The twins have just arrived with their work boots & hard hats at the ready. We could conceivably, change tack now, & take things in one of many possible directions. Could easily define this as a fairly pivotal moment in franchise history, due to an assortment of variables.

Drawing inspiration from the Hab's impressive run & PO-proficiency,(#1) what are the attributes/ingredients we need more of?

#2- Is their roster uniquely different, so therefore we shouldn't spend too much time trying to emulate?

#3- Within context of the salary cap era, is there a common thread in the Habs(& recent Champs: Caps, Blues), which are obvious lessons to heed?

...these are some of the Q's that immediately arise..we'll see where this goes.

1. Hot goaltending makes everything look better

2. you don’t have to have size to forecheck and compete with bigger teams

3. Cemented the fact C depth is key in playoffs

Imo, the main thing that brought it all together for JM was the focus of hitting a homerun in (perhaps) his last big FA.  Ofcourse, Clarke helped but JM made sure it happened.  Just glad the Canucks wasn't the team that gave him that albatross for 2.5 years of elite level goaltending.

Holtby was an overpayment due (mainly) to his resume (imo) and he was mainly brought in to be a hedge, if an unproven Demko is unable to deliver.  A 2 million per year for a year/two would had been a better contract but moving on.

draft a 6'4" D-man tomorrow, and Bo Horvat will be 35 before he is ready

Hedman was 29 la

st season

Petrangelo was 29 the year before

Signing one takes a lot more cap room than we have. Bo may be gone but we should be drafting for the future. Adding another smurf or another winger wont keep the puck out of our net. Demko can only do so much

PS Quinn jumped in after one year, perhaps we can find one almost NHL ready

1. Hot goaltending makes everything look better

2. you don’t have to have size to forecheck and compete with bigger teams

3. Cemented the fact C depth is key in playoffs

size helps you survive the playoffs with out injury. Its not about you fore checking with size. Its about your defence being big enough to withstand the other teams forechecking.

Idk, Marky doesnt strike me as the type of guy who was looking to cash in. In his first season with Clark he finished 15th in Vezina voting, the following year he had Hart and Vezina votes.

Last season with the Canucks he was the only goalie in the NHL to not allow a single clear sight goal, which is insane to think that not one single player could burry one on him if he had a half second to see the shot. I think the adjustments Clark made to Marky’s fundamentals drastically improved his sv% and his positioning to not get beat on a clear sight shot. Either way, Im happy for Marky and happy we didnt sign him as well, it would have caused a ton of headaches for the Canucks

Agreed on the Holtby contract, thank god its only 2 years and if the Kraken are in search of a goalie, theres a former Vezina, Jennings and Stanley cup winning tender with a cheap cap hit for an expansion team, plus its only 1 year, they can reassess Holtby at the end of the contract and decide wether or not he can be their guy for the next 3-5 years until they can establish their identity… thats if it takes them that long… god damn Vegas… If not they either sign him for cheaper or let him go, no love lost. I havent looked to see what other tendies will be available to the Kraken. So im not sure if he would be on their priority list or not. Ill take a look and see what other tendies are available to select or sign
