UBC administration cancels event featuring mass-grave-denying filmmaker and antivaccine activist

This morning, Straight.com featured an article about an upcoming UBC Students for Freedom of Expression panel discussion featuring two controversial speakers.

Hours later, the university banned the November 17 event, which was going to feature filmmaker Lauren Southern and sovereign-citizen supporter and antivaccine activist Kevin Annett, along with residential-school survivor George Brown.

"To be clear, this was not an event sponsored by anyone at the University of British Columbia," UBC vice president Peter Smailes said in a statement. "The host of the event is an external group that is not endorsed by UBC."

He went on to say that UBC has reviewed the requested event-booking.

"Although the university does and will continue to support academic freedom, we have determined that this event should not proceed," Smailes declared. "We believe proceeding with this event would adversely affect campus and community safety."

One of Southern's films is called "The Canadian Mass Grave Hoax", which absolves the Catholic Church of any guilt in the discovery of unmarked graves on former residential-school sites in B.C. and Saskatchewan.

Annett has described himself as the convener of the Republic of Kanata, which has called for Justin Trudeau and others to be charged with treason and criminal conspiracy in a common-law court action for putting the country under a state of "indefinite martial law".

"This destruction of our most cherished and fundamental liberties can never be justified, especially on the grounds of a Corona flu virus which is not as lethal nor as prevalent as a normal seasonal flu," Annett wrote in a post in April 2020. "Trudeau’s arbitrary actions and the police state they are creating are part of a proven global corporate agenda to impose mandatory vaccinations and bio-metric micro-chipping on a controlled and enslaved world population. We must all say no to this monstrous, genocidal plan."

None of Annett's allegations have been proven in a Canadian court or tribunal hearing.

Southern tweeted that she isn't surprised by the cancellation of the event."

Not gonna lie, I'm "OK" with cancelling these morons, especially considering it's on Musqueum land. How about you Lauren?

You know what strikes me as strange about this?  There's a residential school survivor featured on the panel for this event so on some level at least, there might be some credibility or evidence to this.  However, of course it's outright "nope, cancelled" because of the controversial topic.

On the more positive note, at least your  wackos are easier on the eyes, can’t say the same thing about MTG for example.

FYI, four years ago.

FOUR YEARS AGO (info taken from Wikipedia)

In 2017, Southern supported the militant white nationalist group Defend Europe, in their efforts to obstruct search-and-rescue operations of refugees from North Africa; Southern and the white nationalists wanted to prevent refugees from crossing the Mediterranean Sea and entering Europe.[17] Southern was briefly detained by the Italian Coast Guard for blocking a ship embarking on a search-and-rescue mission.[17] Because she joined Defend Europe in an attempt to obstruct rescue operations, Patreon accused Southern of engaging in activity "likely to cause loss of life."[18] Subsequently, Southern was removed from Patreon, demonetized by YouTube, and banned from payment processers such as PayPal.[19][20]

I mean, sure, she can deny she's not a white nationalist, but...  it doesn't make sense for one to support a racist organization without holding the same/similar viewpoints. Would a racist person support an anti-racist group?

Come on.

You really don't want the type of audience that these pieces of garbage would draw on the university's property at all though.

I think the university had to decide "does cancelling the event bring this group more notoriety" or "does having them on the campus bring them legitimacy". They decided that the risk of the second one far outweighs the first. That's probably a good call.

Agreed, plus mitigating the possibly of violence erupting between the audience and the students who'd end up protesting it.  The type of people who'd attend this event are not people who can be reasoned with.

Screw these loser idiots.  It’s not “cancelling” and event.  It’s keeping Loser idiots from causing trouble.  That’s smart.  These are the same loser idiots who protest at hospitals and Remembrance Day events for their freedumbs.  Bunch of friggin’ losers.  And anyone who supports these losers, in any way, is a friggin’ loser too.  Get the hell out of Canada.  These losers and their supporters (with their stupid secret handshake) are not welcomed here.  Leave LOSERS!

Cancel Culture doesn't exist and boomers are the only ones who keep bringing it up as some sort of thing to be worried about.

People who get "cancelled" are just going on vacation and coming back bigger/stronger than ever. You can name countless "cancelled" celebs who seem to be thriving nowadays... just look at people like DaBaby, David Dobrik, Dave Portnoy, Dave Chappelle, Shane Gillis, etc...

Also only select celebs are getting "cancelled" and not average people. I don't get why average people are worried about this.

That said, Lauren Southern is a legit crazy person and she should not be taken seriously. She's of the Stefan Molyneaux variety of nutjob. So I'm happy to see UBC cancel this event. The fact that Southern is still allowed on twitter is shocking to me.

Ah yes, let's  take away Canadian citizenship from those whose viewpoints Alf doesn't agree with. That's not authoritarian at all.
