Id say there’s zero chance (or need) to go into a full blown rebuild at the moment.

There’s just too much young talent on the roster to tear it all down.  Maybe one big trade  for a D man and a small move or two… but assuming Boudreau can do his thing I’m hopeful it’ll start to even out if the team hasn’t gone full Oiler.

Given the hole we’re in - we don’t make the playoffs this year you also have a decent pick in a deep draft plus the option to sell anyone who isn’t fitting in at the deadline.  Prospect pool could be restocked in no time without losing too much firepower.

This season's lost. Gotta play the cards you're dealt with.

Miller in my books is the prime candidate for a major haul and return for the Canucks. Trade him this season, and get a &^@#ing RHD in return. The Rangers come to mind.

Unfortunately his trades were his biggest problem.

He kept doubling down with picks and prospects and squeezing the cap to the point he had no cards left to play.

Now our prospect pool is weak and we’re stuck with more inflated contracts.

He constructed a team that on paper looked to be a playoff team but at the end of the day he has to take responsibility for their failure. He was no closer to building a contender than when he arrived.

I’ll be forever grateful for the OEL / Garland trade.

Well what a relief. It was bound to happen at some point. Poor play by the team meant change was in the making. Benning is definitely a great drafter but when it comes to dealing with contracts and such, he’s not the ideal GM to have. We need a experienced GM who can make good decisions and can build a winning team. Bergevin hiring incoming?

Are you smoking crack?

I think they have lots of quality people that are more than capable of running the show.  They can easily finish this year by filling the job from within.  Maybe long term.

Smyl and Ryan Johnson are both qualified.

If we go on some miracle run under Boudreau with this same roster and make the playoffs then Benning would be vindicated and most of CDC should eat crow. I still don’t think he was the issue, I love our team as constructed, just not how it performed. I also think it’s a major mistake to not have him at the head of drafting anymore. If you think his drafting was bad, just wait to see what comes out of this new group. He was our best drafter in decades and we’re going to sorrily miss him in that aspect, just wait.

Regardless I wish him the best in the future and hope the new GM has success. In the end I want a Stanley Cup one day and I don’t care who it takes to get it for the Canucks.

I’m excited for the future! Go Canucks Go! :canucks:

I'll agree he didn't always hit a homerun, but he wasn't afraid to swing.

He acquired a pretty good roster for us.  With this roster I had expected better results.  To me, that's coaching.

I guess we'll see what BB can do with the parts he has to deal with.

EP being useless cannot be a fault of the GM.  Bo, Brock being shadows of their former selves are coaching issues.

I hope you're right.  I'd love nothing more than a Canucks resurgence.  I'm just a tad disappointed they gutted the whole orca.  I'd have preferred an entire coaching change and GM decided after.

It’s a pretty obvious and glaring need - somethings going to happen.

I could also see a younger player (hoglander?) being packaged with a guy like Myers or Hamonic to try and shake things up as well.

Not sure that’s enough to land a top RHD though.

I recall when Mr Griffith Snr told Harry Neal to fire Roger Nielson, Harry pleaded to keep him, Mr Griffiith said right now we're firing one mman but it could be two !  Hary fired Roger. JB  problem is he didn't want to fire TG and now he's paying the price

Benning could draft players but just could not make effective free agent signings or trades.

A bit of fun for folks, while we're all waiting for this to shake out: go through the UFA signings for the Benning era, and mention who you would, or would not sign as a UFA (yes, Ericksson is on everyone's list......). Keep in mind the cap, and don't bother to list any stupid signings (Player X for league minimum, when he signed for something a whole lot more). Wow us.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016–17_NHL_transactions - Ericksson's year. Take $6 million off the top. Who gets signed in his place?
