[Signing] Oilers re-sign Evander Kane

Seems like they are anticipating this with essentially the same total dollar

7M cap hit vs 5.125M.  Sharks will likely have to retain the 1.875M difference but Kane will only be under contract for 3 years rather than 4.

There's now no real incentive for the Sharks to settle unless Kane accepts less than 1.875M over 3 seasons.

Hopefully he knows how to be a goalie too, without that it, will be the same sh*t different year. Even if they win the division with calgary most likely falling down the ladder. Nice to see Kane take a discount after his on pace for 40 goal finish. Show some loyalty to a team who took a chance.

There is no way San Jose will keep him.  They would have to trade him to Edmonton and lose an asset plus retain money.  Unless they want to send him to the minors or buy him out, both of those scenarios being much worse than just trading him to Edmonton...

Market probably not what he thought.  Edmonton gave him permission to talk to other teams.  They were too far apart in negotiations with his side thinking he could get 40-50M on the open market per Seravalli.

Thought he was going to go for the money but stays for very humble reasons. This is what you need to win, not what Gaudreau and Tkachuk are doing. Good move for the Oilers, bad for the rest of the division and a very small cap hit for a top line big hitting winger who was scoring at a 40 goal pace.

Don't have to lose an asset - Edmonton wants him.  They'll likely just have to retain the cap difference of 1.875M.  It's better than a buyout or burying him in the minors.

San Jose could play hardball.  I'd wager a draft pick is coming back to San Jose...

Big value, but his reputation almost certainly lowered the cost. If he can avoid being a locker room cancer, this could be insane value for the Oilers.

Yes, this is definitely seems like a team-friendly contract.

I still have this vague sense that the Oilers are sort of "cheating" by rewarding a guy who probably deserved a suspension rather than a fresh start with Edmonton last year.

I agree that the question is whether Kane has a negative effect on team chemistry. If he does, the "team-friendly" contract might not be so team-friendly after all.

And what about his appeal of the San Jose decision to terminate his contract. It is that appeal still continuing and, if he wins, what happens. Does he go back to San Jose?

Thought for sure Philly was gonna complete the heel turn hat trick by signing “definitely not a racist” DeAngelo, buying out Lindblom, and signing Kane all in a week.

So from what I've been hearing in Sportsnet Cambell is being linked to the Oilers.
