I’m only guessing but likely young guys think gambling is cool, considering the marketing it’s getting. Wayne and Pronger. Ain’t the young guys they are aiming at, it is us. How big of a known person in the media do you need to be to win the definition of "celebrity". Also does a retired athlete count as an athlete? I could see some smart marketing people pushing boundaries with this one. I was thinking the same thing. Gretzky retired in 1999. Can the Ontario government really legally prevent him from working for a legal industry?

Hopefully they can see from the visceral reaction here that people are sick of being beaten over the head with this. I'd rather hear about Rybelsus for the 1000th time. Drug adds are so cheesy it is comical. Gambling adds are just frustrating.

It also seems that by saying celebrities can’t do it, does that mean they can’t have actors act in commercials? Doug Ford writes lazy policy typically. -DLC-
Here's the thing...gambling's like a lot of other things that can be addictive and potentially ruin lives. Not everyone who gambles will have a negative experience. Those who can control it can use it as some enjoyment and entertainment. We gamble...horses, poker, etc. I was brought up around sensible gambling and learned to do it that way. Basically, take what you can afford to lose...think of it as spending money as you would if you went to a bar, restaurant, whatever. Prepare to lose that money. If you win, that old "know when to walk away" comes into play. It's not the norm to win so if you do, consider yourself lucky. Unless it is a game of poker where knowing the game comes into play. Reading other players, etc. (my Mom was good...played for 50 years and learned to take the losses as part of the deal). Does it suck some people in and destroy lives? Sure, it can. But so do other things if not done in moderation or responsibly. It's people who start to lose then "chase" a win...keep going when they should pack it in and call it a day. A lesson hard learned. I hate the ads and think they're overkill. I agree that there really shouldn't be gambling ads at all...but we have ads for alcohol despite all the problems it causes. But gambling as a whole has been around a long time and if you partake be ready to lose rather than expect to win and you'll be fine. Know your limit stay within it is precisely how it should be done.

There's a difference between taking cash to the casino and leaving the cards at home and having an online account with 24/7 access linked directly to a credit card. It's still possible to gamble responsibly, but it's much more challenging compared to what I grew up with.

I don't online gamble (except freerolls in poker if/when they have them) so I hadn't considered that. Good points, yep. For sure it's a different deal. Down by the River
It is interesting that Ontario recognizes the issues with celebrity-endorsed online gambling enough to the point that they are banning ads... but this hasn't stopped them from advertising their own scratch & win tickets during Blue Jays broadcasts.

This is just Dougie doing something to help his image. Based on this thread, it's working. The changes he made last year around online gambling for Ontario were far more damaging overall. D-Money
I don't gamble strictly as a matter of principle, never have. So for myself, the ads don't bother me more than any other product shilled that I have no interest in. But they are invasive enough that I avoid watching a live game with my kids around. Fortunately, I have a solution that works for me. I don't watch the games live. I start them an hour after, and skip any commercials, and a lot of the intermission junk. I'm live by the end of the game, but the kids are usually in bed by then.
