How could canucks take the consensus pick you are listing when that player was already off the board. All you did is cherry pick some players taken ahead that’s haven’t turned out. That makes no logical sense. You might as well claim he could have drafted the “consensus” McDavid Matthews dahlin with that type of logic. you can’t control what teams ahead of you do only what you can do at your position. Quinn Hughes was the consensus best pick available at #6. He was ranked 4-6th among most draft rankings. Canucks went with BPA despite us really needing a right shot D. If you can’t see it you need to remove the homer vision jb himself wouldn’t make that pick again. he hasn’t played in the nhl yet and it possible he never will. This kid oops, he’s not a kid anymore and he’s got bust written all over him. MT was the best player available then and now. Hey buddy, Russell Westbrooke had THREE surgeries on his knee to get it right and look at him now. He's a young kid and although disappointing to see him miss time, I wouldn't write him off yet

OK So I think Tkatcpuke is a playoff bustaroo as our friend @Alflives says. So far thats true. 3pts in 9 games and a -6. His physicality disappeared too. Sure he has some decent regular season stats but he doesn't carry his team, Calgary sucks hard this year and he's not putting the team on his back. For a 5th oa pick you'd expect a lot more. 1 2

His a good top 6 for sure but I do think his lack of physical effectiveness in the playoffs was a reason they went out and got Lucic.

Quinn Hughes was the consensus best pick available at #6. He was ranked 4-6th among most draft rankings. Canucks went with BPA despite us really needing a right shot D. I wasn't trying to create an alternative history, just taking a jab at the common line of argument (especially in this and the Virtanen thread) that it was obvious all along that Tkachuk would have been the better pick because he was ranked higher pre-draft, neglecting that... a) all these pre-draft lists mean diddly-squat. They are entertaining for the fans and give an entire profession a reason to exist, but real relevance for the actual drafting? Nah! Every team has their own scouting team which basically does nothing but scout and evaluate players. For years. Nonstop. They have insight that we don't. They watch games (and not just read out a list that somebody else compiled like overcritical armchair GMs), they meet and interview the players and their coaches, they see what is going on behind the scenes. Possibly they chatted with Matthew's dad for 2 minutes and realized that they didn't want this rotten apple anywhere near the organization - who knows? b) Benning has an excellent draft record. Also because he trusts his scouts and his instinct and is not afraid to make unpopular choices. EP was ranked 11, he took him at 5. Hughes was ranked 7, JB obviously had him much higher, took him at 7. Virtanen was ranked 13, he got him at 5. McCann was ranked 11, higher than Jake, JB took him at 24. The cherry picking that I observe is criticizing 2 of Bennings picks because the players didn't become the bestest players of their draft year immediately (and probably never will, although one of them has just had the most unlucky injury history that you can imagine after never being injured in junior). The expectation of JB batting 1.0 and outsmarting every other GM in every possible way are not rational. You cannot load a savegame in real life and JB is doing a good job in the one chance he has. 2 4
Canucks Curse
lol- we have been waiting a while to hear what this drastic removal of OJ was from Utica due to injury, I find this strange, hopefully it is not something life threatening like cancer, or something like that, I just find the whole thing strange. It has not turned out to be a good pick obviously, but I really think this is due to injuries. He had a good season in Finland and was playing well until he got hurt this year and last year. you win some, you lose some, I think overall, the drafting of Judd Bracket and Jim Benning has been the best we have ever had as a franchise and overall very strong. I'm hopeful Podkolzin becomes a stud, I think he has the tools, I hope it turns out to be a pick we do not regret. All the best too OJ, whatever the injury, I hope it is not bad and that you make a speedy recovery
