Popular Post oldnews
Meh - it's probably as simple as ppg for most of these voters. I wouldn't call it a popularity contest, but....it's a vote. The result depends on the consciousness of voters. Hughes followed up with an unreal, ppg playoffs, but so did Makar. And one factor in Makar's favour imo - he was Colorado's 2nd leading scorer, whereas Hughes was 4th in Van... Maybe the vote 'should' have been a bit closer....but.... Whatever. Hughes is unreal. This kind of thing doesn't matter much - might only push him harder to 'prove' himself. 3
Nucker 67
It's okay Quinn, you're still the better player Having Canucks in 3 straight years of Calder nominations - when's the last time any team has done that?
zapperman
Oh well. We all knew it was going to be close. Makar gets about 2/3 of the first place votes and Quinn gets 1/3. The funny part for me is Quinn’s 6 3rd place votes, meaning those 6 put Merz, Fox, Blackwood and kubalik ahead of him.
Nucker 67
I guess thank you NHL, Canucks might save a few bucks on Hughes' next contract ah who am I kidding, the kid can have as much money as he wants

We don't have to get upset that there are other great young players out there or that it minimizes the fact Hughes is already the best defenceman that has ever been on the team. I am not upset at all. I expected this and see why they voted that way. I am saying that Hughes is a year younger, and had, arguably an equal year, playing on a worse team. Makar is awesome and Canadian and came out of the Alberta Junior league. I am a big fan. But if I was a GM, I would take Hughes. He just seems a bit more unique to me.

48MPHSlapShot
Calm down. It was pretty close. Both Hughes and Makar would have been deserving winners. Edited September 22, 2020 by 48MPHSlapShot
Bure2Win
I think the Calder voting should go to the rookie with the most points, not by some secret ballot of personal preference, just stupid.

Is there a performance bonus that gets tacked on to the salary cap for the Calder winner ? Apparently he had already hit the max for bonuses this year
DrJockitch
I am just thrilled to have Quinn Hughes. I think he is probably the better player of the two overall. I won't even pretend to be nonbiased though. I hope to see 15 years of playoff battles between the two. I really wanted to see the Canucks vs. Avs in the playoffs this year but didn't get my wish. So fun when those two teams play last couple of years.
-Vintage Canuck-
It was Murat Ates who gave a first-place vote to Adam Fox. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1RUV95kCzXunhJgyQP4Qi4TwsR7kB4Oy9/view 1
MikeBossy
Only time a Canuck was truly robbed in Calder voting was when Leetch beat out Linden.

There's quite a few young guns around the league so I wouldn't be so sure. Makar, Hughes, Heiskanen, Dahlin, Jones, Werenski, even guys like Provorov/ Sergachev (depends where he goes and if he's a #1 LD)/ Chabot (depends on what kind of help he gets from the Sens)/ Ryan Pulock/ DeAngelo? I'm sure I'm missing some.
philtbc829
NOT Happy!!! Hughes is way more deserving than Makar!!!

Makar had a fantastic season himself, better PPG than QH if I remember right. Very different teams, very different roles. Hughes was jobbed.

So you think they should change the award to Rookie with the most points like an Art Ross but for rookies? No goalies? Probably never see a defencemen win again either ( was a special year for rookie Dman)
