Canucks pursing top Russian prospect!

Recommended Posts

Looks like this Dman is well coveted, Leaf's, Calgary, Canucks and more teams very interested in him.

There’s a new prospect coming to town, and teams are already starting to line up to get a look.

Russian defenceman Nikita Zaitsev has 13 points (four goals, nine assists) in 22 games with the KHL’s CSKA Moscow this season, and has many NHL clubs excited about his strong two-way game.

According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, Zaitsev’s agent has said the 24-year-old is coming to North America next year.

Several teams — the Toronto Maple LeafsCalgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks among them — will fly overseas to see him play in a tournament next week. The Philadelphia Flyers and Los Angeles Kings are also said to have a strong interest in the 24-year-old. Friedman also noted that some teams are already in the process of meeting with him.

Nikita was invited and visited the Leafs head office in June 2015. In his interview with Russian media at that time he said that he was shocked and pleasantly surprised with their hospitality  He visited training facility, talked to the general manager and head coach, passed some physical tests. he is 6'1", 176 lb. 24 years old. Offensive D, RHS, skates "like Bure". Favorite NHL player - Mike Green.

Probably easier to convince a young guy coming over with the amount of young pieces we have on our team now.

McCann, Virtanen, Hutton, Horvat and possibly Baertschi and Gaunce if they can stick full time.

Also Edler, Tanev, Sutter, and Dorsett are all in their prime years and signed to decent deals.

The biggest selling point though, someone else mentioned 1 year contracts to bartowski and weber gives us options and Zaitsev an actual shot in making the team next year.

I think we need an over-under for these types of rumours of prospects.

I cannot actually recall the last time we nabbed someone from Europe in this manner, but we're always involved in the rumours or possibilities of.  NCAA as well, always a front runner never the winner.
