Reports have Carlson asking for 8-9 million per on a long term deal. I don't see how that's helpful, even if he is one of the better power play QB's/offensive specialists.

At 8 mil I would be looking elsewhere.  7.5 is the most he should get.  He is solid and does contribute but 8-9m for term... I’m out.

I guess McAvoy and Chychrun have had their own injury/health issues too, but seeing what Sergachev did should be putting a lot of pressure on Benning's back.

Drafting is a long game.  Don’t think any GM is feeling pressure to see a draft year plus two defender light it up.

You his doctor?   You seen his medical report.   Warhippy, with due respect saying this is the "exact same injury" is like saying you pulled your hamstring and I pulled my hamstring and therefore we both will have exact same (or similar) impacts whereas in reality I have seen a pulled hamstring pretty much derail a career and other times be nothing more than rest/ice/warm for a week and then like it never happened.   To say that it is in same part of body as Edler would be about all you can say at this stage.

Do many of you have permission to use sharp things?   I know most of you are not Guardian negative but step away from the edge people, hockey players get hurt and they heal.   It happens.

You know....it is the exact same surgery in roughly the exact same spot of the back.  So while it isn't an identical injury per say....are you his doctor?

$500k seems like a strange thing to quibble amount when we're talking $8 mil.

Saying that OJ went through the same surgical procedure (micro discectomy) as Edler does not mean that they had exactly the same injury! A micro discectomy is essentially a laproscopic procedure where they go in and shave a disc that is protruding. There can be a huge difference, case to case, depending (as always) on the severity of the injury ( how much protrusion, any tearing, etc). From the brief description, it could totally be caused by improper weight training (very common!). There is no reason to think that he won't be healed within 4-6 weeks. However, if he were my patient, I would suggest that he continue to be careful in how much he challenges his low back in training for a further few weeks.. He's a young athlete...with all that fabulous growth hormone still flooding his system! He'll be fine. Btw, I think Edler had been carrying his low back injury for a while before he had the surgery. So, without knowing any of his medical details, that could point to a developing chronic situation, perhaps causing more damage.

Could I come in for a general checkup next Wednesday?

I had discectomy surgery a few years back here in New Zealand.  At the time, I was a high school teacher who was coaching my school's senior rugby team, and in one of the parent/teacher-student fundraising games, was hit hard/pulled down in a tackle that led to sciatica issues.  I'm relatively active, so the recovery wasn't too bad, as long as I kept in mind limiting the bending and twisting that I did.  I will say, though, I would be a little worried about what kind of physio and exercise instruction he receives post surgery, especially given the injuries that seem to happen to Canuck players.  Three years after my surgery, again playing rugby, I ruptured my left knee ACL.  At the time, I though it was just bad luck, but my surgeon basically said that the exercises I had been diligently doing for the previous recovery from the discectomy changed the way that I was moving my body, and without realising it, too much torque was being put on my left knee afterwards, which ultimately resulted in the ACL rupture when running at speed, as too much pressure was being placed on that ligament.  So, more suffering, but ultimately all good.  However, I'm not a professional athlete, whose earning power is determined by how well I play.  So, I just hope that Olli gets good advice for his recovery, that he goes with a surgeon that he is comfortable with, and that the team lets him recover at his own pace and managed by his surgeon for his best personal outcome with input form team doctors, rather than one set only by team doctors.  If the recovery is rushed, we won't see the talented player we drafted play for us, just an pale imitation.

Just like to clarify this injury is the EXACT same injury edler suffered back in 2011 literally caused him reduced mobility and was the last year we really saw him lay those thundering hits.

Won't say it will affect OJ long term, but will say i was very vocal about wanting to trade edler after the same surgery.

Hoping to see OJ at camp completely healthy but backs are very VERY tricky things

Disk injuries vary greatly. A number of different things are lot more in favour for OJ.

His age. Most athletes in contact sports have disk injuries by their early twenties and never notice until much later, if at all.

Mechanism of injury. What OJ experienced during dry land training isn’t as bad as Edlers injury which was discovered during the season post contact.

Advances in technology and awareness.  OJ may be benefiting from a much more proactive detection vs severity of injury.  Maybe the Canucks have learned from their experience with Edler et al.

Last and not least. Edler had a bad disk injury where he leg weakness and likely shooting nerve pain.  It started right away, it wasn’t slight discomfort training.  OJ wasn’t sidelined until he had imaging done. Much different levels of severity.  His surgery is likely due to preventative/speedy recovery treatment moreso than reactive/repair. I recovered from mine by 4.5 months of physio at 40 years old, I am back to lifting

obese pts albeit being smarter about how.

I have optism that this is no where near as bad as Edlers, but it is still concerning.

You blew out your ACL running vs contact?!  Wow, slow down and play lawn bowling ;) you have to live past rugby.  I know from experience. I didn’t learn the first number of times either. As for ACLs  I did mine in contact twice, first cleaning up a lineout and seconds, playing buggers and getting clocked by a tighthead prop who was playing without his contacts, in poor light. Ripped my acl to shreds. I fully recovered.

Went on to find in’s more interesting ways to  destroy my body, but I feel my rugby playing days everyday a storm is coming in.

People need to calm down.  This is daycare surgery on a 20 yr old athlete.  All surgery can have risks, but this procedure is not very invasive.  He should be fully recovered in 6 weeks.

Let's not jump to career ending just yet eh?

Ya don’t know why people saying edler was the same, his physicality basically became non existent and he has stated that his back issues are a big cause why

So true.  Various injuries over the years, and I'm still coaching the kids, but these days, playing darts over a pint of beer is more my thing.  Don't know about lawn bowling, though ... when I walk past the local clubs, the oldies look pretty competitive!

Some people are so bizarre.   Why can't it be both?   Kid could have had a nagging back all year (more players have things than don't) that he then tweaked while training.   God Gawd it happens all the time.   I honestly wonder sometimes if some of the people that post in this hockey forum have actually ever played hockey?  Even the beer league and house league warriors must know that they got knicks along the way - no magnify those due to the intensity and speed of the game at pro speed and strength and I am amazed at guys like the Sedins who must be about as tough as anyone who has ever worn skates.

Just curious....what level did you play?
