Need to see how banks follow up. Also known as prime rate.

Banks don't always move at same pace as BoC. For example during the last financial crisis there were two times in which the BoC reduced rate by 25 pts but banks only moved 15.

My network suggests we should know what banks are doing by end of day.

Edit: you shouldn't have to apply as most variable rates are directly related to prime.

Pretty much this. That said banks are gearing up for quite a few defaults so they will not lower rates as much as the BOC. People have leveraged themselves far too much and it is going to hurt bad.

Alberta health minister accused of berating Calgary physician, 'intimidating' citizens

Tyler Shandro yelled at neighbour over Facebook post alleging conflict of interest

Alberta Health Minister Tyler Shandro and his wife are accused of berating a Calgary doctor at his house in front of his wife and children for reposting a derogatory meme on Facebook.

The Facebook image referenced an alleged conflict of interest involving the Calgary MLA, his wife Andrea Shandro and a supplementary health benefits company of which they are part-owners.

Shandro, through a spokesperson, confirmed that he and his wife went to the doctor's house on Saturday evening to talk to the doctor about the meme.

The Shandros were subjected to a flurry of sometimes vicious personal attacks on social media after it was revealed last week that Andrea Shandro operates a Calgary company called Vital Partners Inc.

Among other services, Vital Partners brokers supplementary health insurance, including for some coverage delisted through recent legislative changes advanced by Shandro.

Incorporation documents show Shandro and his wife are part-owners of Vital Partners through their holding company, Shandro Holdings. Andrea Shandro's sister is the other owner.

Late last week, the United Conservative Party government released a letter from Alberta's ethics commissioner, Marguerite Trussler, which said Shandro is not a director of the company, had transferred his shares to a blind trust, and is in compliance with the Conflicts of Interest Act.

Email exchanges

CBC News has also obtained email exchanges between Shandro and private citizens. The emails include a threat to send the legislature's security services after one person and calling another "crazy" for raising concerns about his alleged conflict.

Shandro's behaviour raises questions about his suitability as health minister during the COVID-19 pandemic, said political scientist Lori Turnbull, director of Dalhousie University's School of Public Administration in Halifax.

"He went to a private citizen's home to intimidate him in front of his family?" she said. "To say that is poor judgment is a huge understatement. What was going through his head?"

Turnbull said health professionals across the country are staying calm and providing assurances to the public during an extremely dire time.

"It seems like this health minister is not focused on the pandemic at all, which puts him obviously in a category of his own among health ministers and health practitioners in the country," Turnbull said.

"At a time like this when we are looking to them for leadership, he is out intimidating people."

'Delete your post'

Calgary physician Dr. Mukarram Zaidi said Shandro and his wife Andrea Shandro, who live in the same neighbourhood, came to his home at about 7 p.m. on Saturday. Zaidi's two teenage sons were playing basketball on the driveway.

"[Shandro] tells my children that he wants to speak to me and they should stay inside," because "they don't want to listen to what is going to happen," Zaidi said.

Is Britain still a first world country?

Boris seemed a bit confused at the beginning of this outbreak, but was doing better, hope this news doesn't mess up their response.

Italy reports 969 deaths today vs 662 yesterday

Fri 27 Mar 2020 16:35:27 GMT

Spike in the dealt toll today

It's the deadliest day of the outbreak in Italy so far with nearly 1000 people killed by this terrible virus.

Total cases rose 5959 vs 6153 a day ago and total cases are at 86,498. The slower pace of overall cases is a sign of flattening so that's positive but it's tough to look past the deaths. They're now at 9134 today, which is 10.4% of all cases.

Italian official numbers have now passed China.

Canada fin min Morneau: To offer gov't-guaranteed loans to Canadian oil

Fri 27 Mar 2020 17:49:33 GMT

Comments from finance minister Morneau

Earlier this week Morneau said help for the oil and gas industry is coming in the form of government-guaranteed credit. He said the details are being worked on.

Earlier in the week he said that the 10-biggest producers in the country had their own credit facilities and that the priority was small and medium-sized producers.

Morneau also said that discussions are ongoing with the airline industry and that measures for it are coming in the not-too-distant future.

There are growing signs of workers walking off the job

Fri 27 Mar 2020 18:11:51 GMT

Instacart plans nationwide strike

Many workers are off work right now but many are also worried about being forced to work in conditions they don't think are safe.

As the virus travels and stories of people dying circulate, more people are unwilling to risk their health or their families health on the job. Others are upset because they don't have safety equipment.

Vice reports that 175,000 gig workers at grocery-shopping service Instacart are planning a nationwide strike on Monday.

"Workers say they will refuse to accept orders until Instacart provides hazard pay of an additional $5 an order, free safety gear (hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes, and soap) to workers, and expands its paid sick leave to include workers with pre-existing conditions who have been advised by their doctors not to work at this time. Workers say the strike will last until Instacart agrees to these terms."

The same report talks about other strikes at Amazon wearhouses, sanitation workers in Pittsburgh and poultry plant workers in Georgia. In Boston, there is talk of unionization after the Boston Bruins laid off workers without pay.

A tail risk in this entire saga is that it promotes unionization more broadly or at least stops the trend of de-unionization.

Here's a construction worker in Toronto on a rant to fellow employees that's gone viral.

^ It might have been explained already but is there any reason Japan's numbers aren't on that list?

Tokyo governor confirms another 40 new coronavirus cases in the city today

Fri 27 Mar 2020 07:11:58 GMT

Tokyo governor, Yuriko Koike, delivers a press conference

This is roughly consistent with the 41 new cases reported on Wednesday and the 47 new cases reported on Thursday. With little details being offered, it is tough to say how much more they are testing currently compared to a week ago.

But the increase today will bring the total number of confirmed cases to about 300 in Tokyo as the government mulls over whether or not to declare a state of emergency.

Some say the Japanese numbers are not to be trusted as they were trying to save the Olympics. Hopefully not but their numbers are on the rise now.

Japan is further down the list. You can find all the numbers here ......... https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

Very interesting story.

I ask this in all sincerity, are there any Trump supporter Americans reading this post and if so, do you actually believe the covid19 threat is not a big deal as stated in the story?

I am trying to understand the rationale for that point of view.

Australia going next level with the quarantines. Dragging anyone off to a hotel for a 2 week stay regardless of if they're an Australian citizen or permanent resident.

Forced coronavirus quarantine for all people returning to Australia

All passengers who arrive in Australia after midnight on Saturday will go into mandatory quarantine in hotels for a fortnight, Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced.

Concerns have been raised about people not adhering to self-isolation requirements, particularly after getting off cruise ships.

Defence Force personnel will be brought in to support state and territory police in enforcing the mandatory quarantine and the self-isolation rules that apply to people who are already in Australia or who arrive before the Saturday midnight deadline.

Mr Morrison said two-thirds of the nation's confirmed cases of coronavirus had come from people travelling from overseas.

"States and territories will be quarantining all arrivals through our airports in hotels and other accommodation facilities for the two weeks of their mandatory self-isolation before they are able to return to their home," he said.

"If their home is in South Australia, or in Perth, or in Tasmania and they have arrived in Melbourne, they will be quarantining in Melbourne."

The Trump supporters based in Canada are already booking their vacation to the USA when the borders open up on Easter weekend.
