To be clear, it wasn’t even the pro rated 25% of Savard’s actual salary.  it is even smarter than that.  Detroit unloaded Lashoff the other way who earns $275k in the minors to make it even less costly in terms of real dollars

Then credit back the 20% escrow for the 25% of Savard to

make the dollars even smaller.

25% of Savard’s salary is $1 million... only about 1/4 of the season left so that is about $250k give or take a little.. refund 20% escrow and that drops it to $200k.

Then remove Lashoff salary (no idea how far the AHL is into their season for pro-rating it...they started later than the NHL but even say 1/4 that which was offloaded and that is about $70k savings for Detroit.

So they bought a 4th rounder for about $100-150k.

That doesn’t even take into account the 10% deferral in Savard’s salary that doesn’t have to get paid now, but has to be paid back eventually.

Does anything really think Benning could imagine and pull off a move like that?  He sure hasn’t shown it in 7 years.

Amazingly done bit of cap management by the bolts on this.

But I'm curious how people can make every single movement in this league in to a non stop whine or complaint against the Canucks and still claim to be a fan of the team.

Seems like life might be too short to spend the entirety of it finding new ways to be upset all the time

What he said......

We have a lot of whiners. Ridiculous how a pretty average 3 x 3.25 signing has some people wanting to cheer for Seattle. Disgusting.

The cap circumvention is being unchecked for certain teams, while we got dinged hard for Luongo's cap.

Pearson's contract by itself is fine, but when you have a gm that constantly and an established pattern of giving out contracts that are one year too long and one million too high and doesn't even show any hint of learning from those mistakes, that contract become an albatross and fireable offense.

Also: Go Kracken Go! :metal:/s

This trade is so slimy.

Don't think this is gonna sit well with Bettman along with the new ltir loophole that Toronto and Tampa are employing.

Watch Bettman close these up with the next cba.

What loophole?  Vancouver has 3 players on LTIR so not sure to see where is the loophole.

The way LTIR works is more of a detriment than anything else.  GMs would prefer to simply remove the cap hit of those long term injuries.

Teams often can’t get full relief for the injured player and end up losing some cap space for their regular roster by going into LTIR.  StLouis lost 300K - ie they are operating at 81.2M max.  Even Vancouver lost 10K.

They lose flexibility.  There were points this season (before Pettersson went on LTIR) where they technically couldn’t recall Juolevi from the taxi squad because of how cap space works for a recall under LTIR (- they lose the bonus cushion).

LTIR also prevents teams from banking cap space so the performance bonuses get pushed into the following season.  Canucks  have 1.7M against their cap this season because last season they had to use LTIR.  There’s at least 580K for Hughes being pushed into next because they are again in LTIR with Ferland, Pettersson, Beagle.

The loophole comes in during the playoffs (or after the trade deadline?) where the there is no more cap. So essentially teams can trade players on ltir or have their star players on ltir and miraculously be ready for play in the playoffs that would put said team way above the cap.

Essentially what Tampa is trying to pull this off season.
