If OJ hadn't done that he'd be ripped for letting Tkatchup abuse him. …and also, Tkachuck was going to have the puck… so Juolevi read the play perfectly and took out Tkachuck. It’s nice to finally have a Canucks D willingly go for the hit and make it look easy. Some people wanna see ugly in everything. Most of us see a solid kid making a solid hit on a player with the puck. Edited August 10, 2021 by Me_ 3 3

Plus, we have more good forwards (who are good and smart) so our guys will be smarter on the forecheck. We shouldn’t see so many odd man chances against with having Shaw’s teaching, and better balanced forward groups. OJ, and all our D, will look much improved defensively. every time I see Pittsburg I wonder why (outside of Crosby) they always seem to have a team with great support from their F group, even with a lot of changes. I mean I don't really, its the coaching, I guess more accurately I wonder why the Canucks can't play more like that. I hope that's what we end up being more like. I don't expect that level just yet, but even a little bit takes pressure off our d to be perfect every shift.

I get what Doc is saying, generally you don't want to get sucked into Tkatpuke's antics, but sometimes you also just need to put the creep on his ass. 2 1 1

I don't expect that level just yet, but even a little bit takes pressure off our d to be perfect every shift. I think too many of our forwards were either too slow of foot or of mind. Slow guys get trapped on the wrong side of the puck all over the ice, but especially on the forecheck. Dumb guys (Jake) are forever chasing the play. Now we have forwards who are smart and can skate. We can still play Green’s preferred high pressure forecheck, but the results will be way better for defending. Back pressure on the puck is huge for D. No D man in the league can survive multiple odd man rush chances without back pressure. OJ, being smart, and skilled, will greatly benefit from having smarter and faster forwards. 1 2
Popular Post SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME
8 minutes ago, HKSR said: What I actually saw was a lazy Virtanen defensive play where he plays his man on the wrong side of the play letting his guy get passed him at the blueline. If he plays his man correctly, and OJ lays out Tkachuk, the play is dead. Yeah, it’s kind of an example of the stuff I hope we don’t see as much of this season. Even if OJ doesn’t make that hit, he’s facing a two-on-one, because of the failure of his teammates to do their job up ice. Every Canuck on the ice, save for Jake, has their man pretty effectively covered. Shouldn’t really have been a dangerous play, as they’re starting with good position, relative to the net, and have even numbers man-to-man. But it quickly turns into a mismatch, when Jake makes a bad read, and puts himself on the wrong side of the play. Hopefully between the personnel changes and Brad Shaw helping out on the X’s and O’s, we’ll see better structure and cohesion between the forwards and defence, especially when it comes to in-zone defending. That said, every individual player can make a bad read to get caught out of position, even when systems are locked down. So I can’t really say that specific clip represents a team/systems issue, rather than just one guy ****ing up. Just hoping we see a lot less of it this year. And when we do have breakdowns, hopefully they’re more infrequent and mostly about individual guys going “oops,” and less about a systemic permissibility in-zone, and forwards regularly leaving the D exposed and unsupported. But I’m sure that clip (and hundreds of others) have been looked at by the coaches. I guess we can call it a final contribution from Jake. Always the “team guy,” Virtanen left the Vancouver coaches with the parting gift of video they can use to teach our forwards what not to do in your own zone. Thanks Jake! Forever a Canuck.
Maddogy
Chances are this is his last season as a Canuck. Not many Canucks on an one year show me deal make it to the next year. Enjoy this season folks. 1

Reason I'm asking is, we don't really need to carry Schenn on active roster as he's just good as a 1st call-up option... if Olli is good enough then we keep him as our 6/7th D-man and keep 2 extra forwards to offer more flexibility... also, having Schenn play in Abbotsford brings more benefits too as he gets regular minutes to stay sharp AND be their leader! Schenn wouldn't clear waivers with his contract. 1

Popular Post oldnews
OJ is a beauty. Hopefully he can stay healthy - otherwise he has all the tools, and most importantly the most critical one....intelligence/composure. Just when he started to get footing last year - he gets hit extremely hard by covid, loses a lot of weight and has another setback second half of the season. But really - it doesn't matter - what matters is what he becomes when this young group matures.... Future of the left side is looking great... Don't think the team has ever had this much young talent on one side of their blueline - Hughes, Juolevi and Rathbone - extremely promising imo. 1

Myers and Hamonic are the top 2 RHD's locked in... so you want Poolman to share time with Schenn?? I'm confused... I think Rathbone and Juolevi should be our 6/7... unless Schenn outshines them at camp and can also cover left side in a pinch!
