We signed Demko to a very similar contract (slightly less, same term) with about the same number of career games.

Perhaps.. but Demko's also younger, had higher pedigree, and has shown the ability to perform under pressure come playoff time.

I would agree. I don't think it's crazy for Merzlikins to get the contract he did given his experience, though I do think the Demko deal was smarter and better.

Look what toronto has done to the league. Kyle freaking dumbass has caused everyone and their mothers to be overpaid

Merzlikins is a far better goalie than either of the career backups Dubas has to work with.  You can't realistically use anything that idiot hands out as a comparable; the entire hockey world knows he's even stupider than Milbury.

That’s not what happened.

Columbus is in a terrible situation right now and so they need to overpay players on both term and money in order to retain and build a core.

Man, Columbus situation is not that bad. San Jose, Buffalo and Arizona are all far worse.

Overpaid? What? Merzlikins? He's good man. If I'm the GM there, sure, I blow up the team but they've got Laine, Werenski, Boqvist, draft picks, Sillinger, Ceulemans, Johnson, Foudy, Texier, Bean and the two goalies. If they do well in free agency, especially next year with some really elite guys available, there's some potential. Plus there's teams that are going to look to unload some assets. Eichel in Buffalo. Schmaltz in Arizona. Monahan and Gaudreau in Calgary. And to some, even Larkin and Bertuzzi in Detroit. They've got picks, they've got prospects and if someone good enough comes available and the price is right, it's the way to go.

While all us kids were playing with mini sticks and hockey cards Dumbass was playing with his abacus and calculator, and he still can't add up to 82. Do you think this guy has ever even held a hockey stick before?

Was a Ian Clark pick.  Kekaleinen credited him for the find and developing him.  Was drafted in 2014 like Demko but as an overager and stayed several years in the Swiss league before finally coming over.

He had such a shaky start to his NHL career coming from the bigger ice but was on the roster without going through the AHL other than 2 games.

He was 0-4-4 when Korpisalo got injured and had to take over the starter job.  He was one of the best goalies from January onwards.  There was a real Elvis mania going on before the league had to shut down.   Their team never got going last season.

Korpisalo and Merzlikins were both UFAs in a year and CBJ had to decide which one to keep.
