[Report] Canucks announce Hockey Operations enhancements

Vancouver, B.C. - Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin announced today that the club has made multiple enhancements and additions to its Hockey Operations department. Ryan Johnson has been promoted to Assistant to the General Manager and will retain his role as General Manager of the Abbotsford Canucks. Scott Young will act as Director of Player Personnel, while Frank Golden joins as College Free Agent Scout, Dylan Crawford has been named Video Coach, and Dale Tallon will serve as Senior Advisor and Professional Scout.

 

"We're pleased to have solidified our Hockey Operations department for next season with the promotion of Ryan Johnson and the additions of Scott Young, Frank Golden, Dylan Crawford and Dale Tallon," said Allvin. "These individuals bring immense experience and are committed to the vision we have in building the Vancouver Canucks to be a winning franchise."

 

After serving as the first General Manager of the Abbotsford Canucks and leading the team to the playoffs in their inaugural season, Ryan Johnson will continue to manage Abbotsford while also working closely with Patrik Allvin on all hockey-related matters in his new elevated position.

 

Johnson previously served as the General Manager of Vancouver's AHL affiliate Utica Comets since 2017 and as Senior Director of Player Development since 2018. He initially joined the organization in 2013 as a Player Development Consultant and became Director of Player Development in 2016.

 

Johnson played 701 regular season NHL games from 1997-2011, amassing 122 points (38-84-122), including 120 games in a Canucks uniform (3-11-14). He also appeared in 29 career playoff games, adding five points (1-4-5) and 12 penalty minutes. Over his 13-year NHL career, Johnson led all NHL forwards in blocked shots (455) and blocked shots per 60 minutes (38.96).

 

Scott Young joins the organization as Director of Player Personnel after spending the past five years as Director of Player Development for the Pittsburgh Penguins, where he oversaw efforts to develop prospects in the minor leagues as well as junior and college hockey. He also served as an assistant coach for Team USA at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang.

 

Young brings a winning pedigree to the organization as a two-time Stanley Cup Champion (1991 - Pittsburgh; 1996 - Colorado). His professional accolades also extend beyond the NHL, as he represented the United States at nearly every major international tournament, winning silver at the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, gold at the 1996 World Cup of Hockey and bronze at the 1986 World Junior Championship. He was enshrined into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in the Class of 2017.

 

A former 17-year NHL veteran, Young played 1,181 career regular season games with Hartford, Pittsburgh, Quebec, Colorado, Anaheim, St. Louis and Dallas, totalling 756 points (342-414-756). Young was originally selected by Hartford in the first round, 11th overall in the 1986 NHL Entry Draft.

 

Frank Golden joins the Canucks as a College Free Agent Scout after eight seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins in an Amateur Scout capacity. Frank will use his vast hockey knowledge and many years of experience to help continue to improve and add to the Canucks prospect pool.

 

Dylan Crawford has been named Video Coach for the Vancouver Canucks. Crawford will work alongside Head Coach Bruce Boudreau, Assistant Coaches Brad Shaw and Jason King, and Ian Clark, Director of Goaltending and Head Goaltending Coach.

 

Crawford joins the Canucks from the Chicago Blackhawks where he served as Assistant Video Coach for four seasons. Prior to joining the Blackhawks, Crawford spent two seasons with the Ottawa Senators organization as the Head Video Coach of the Binghamton Senators (2016.17) and Belleville Senators (2017.18). He is also the son of former Vancouver Canucks player (1981-1987) and Head Coach (1999-2006) Marc Crawford.

 

Dale Tallon will act as a Senior Advisor and Professional Scout, bringing with him 22 years of hockey operations experience with the Florida Panthers and Chicago Blackhawks. He most recently served as General Manager of the Panthers for 10 seasons from 2010-2020, while simultaneously occupying the role of Executive VP of Hockey Operations from 2010-2017 and President of Hockey Operations from 2017-2020.

 

Previously, he worked multiple roles in the Chicago Blackhawks front office from 1998-2010, including Director of Player Personnel (1998-2002), Assistant General Manager (2002-2005), General Manager (2005-2009), and Senior Advisor (2009.10), winning the 2010 Stanley Cup in his final season in Chicago.

 

Tallon, a former NHL defenceman, made history in 1970 as the Canucks' first ever selection at an NHL Entry Draft. He went on to play 222 games in a Canucks uniform, recording 137 points (44-93-137) and 219 penalty minutes before concluding his playing career with 336 points (98-238-336) in 642 games with the Canucks, Chicago Blackhawks, and Pittsburgh Penguins.

Wow, quite the power team that JR has assembled for the front office.

 

I think part of the failings of the last management group goes back to the failure to replace Linden when he left. We wound up spreading the workload on too few of people which falls on ownership.

 

Whether Benning stayed or left, should have fallen on the shoulders of an experienced President, like Jim Rutherford!
