2023 NHL Entry Draft

Good Joulevi retrospective here from HF

Why was Juolevi drafted so high?

He was 6'2, moved well and had a very good first pass out of his zone.

He came to the CHL and lucked out by playing behind one of the most dominant lines in Junior Matthew Tkachuk - Christian Dvorak - Mitch Marner.

His ability to pass the puck obvious worked well with such a dominant forward line that dominated the opposition. It masked a lot of his defensive weakness. The fact he's soft and has trouble winning puck battles along the board and front of the net.

Goes to the WJC where he again played behind Puljujärvi - Aho - Laine. Again that line dominated. and he picked up 9 assists in 7 games.

Any draft eligible defenseman producing well at the U20 naturally will get a ton of hype.
That's when his stock started to skyrocket.

Still he didn't even finish ppg in the CHL, and in his draft +1 when the marner/tkachuk left, his production stalled. He goes to the WJC again, no Aho, no Laine, and he finished with 2 points in 6 games.

Basically by draft +1. The writing was on the wall, his ability was overrated by who he got to play with.

But most importantly he can't defend. And when injuries hit, game over.

He had Simashev at 20+ though, which makes me wonder if he missed something.

I know this board is high on large Russian men, but it wouldn’t be the first time the coyotes did something ridiculous.

Let’s just hope that Willy has a work ethic and a level of dedication that OJ never displayed.

One of the first things he said was that he was very driven in wanting to make sure that picking him ends up being a great decision for the Canucks.

He is also taking the  NCAA route and their coach already is looking forward to working with him.

Here's how CDC looks at our first round picks in hindsight...

Canucks make solid selection.

Next day, solid selection gets run over by a herd of Water Buffalo and can never play again.

Just now, Elias Pettersson said:

I wanted Wood but I understand why we took Willander. It’s just so hard to find top 4 RHD. You basically have to draft them, which is what we did.

IMO Wood is gonna be a stud. I’m hoping my Swedish buddy Willander is the next Rasmus Andersson, only better.

Im with you but lets hope for Heiskanen level!

Yeah, this sounds very promising. I don’t expect many, if any, parallels to OJ.

The guy injured his knee, then his back, then had two serious surgeries, then had chronic hip issues.

Injuries derailed his career, it's really not that hard to explain.

To be fair... OJ had an reallllllly good first pass. You saw it when he played with the big club for a while. There were certainly issues and injuries were bad, but that first pass was elite.

When kids get drafted at 18 years old, they are STILL very raw. There's only a few Crosby's or Bedards etc, that you look at as can't miss guys.

There are SOOOO many things that can happen to prospects after they get drafted.

The only one I really hold against Benning was Virtanen, there was clearly some major maturity questions there as well as work ethic and moral compass. Stuff that they should have gotten a sense of from watching him before the draft and in pre-draft interviews.
