Credit where credit is due.  This was a great trade.  Bear has been a very solid addition to this D core.  I hope that we re sign him, but if we don't and have to deal him at the deadline, he will certainly get a bigger return than the 5th we paid for him.

but you have to look at the Bear trade and the Dickenson trade as a whole.

It's the latter trade that created the cap space, and it cost the Canucks a 2nd round pick.

a medical check is mandatory for all soccer players whenever they join a new team in Europe. Not sure if there is something comparable in hockey in North America. Found the following report on the internet about Ethan Bear's health issues:

Bear was given permission to talk with other teams, but in the end he was able to work something out with Carolina. He's coming off a difficult season where he scored five goals and 14 points in 58 contests while averaging 16:05 minutes. Some of his struggles might be due to long COVID, which he previously stated might be the cause of some breathing problems he's experienced. When he first established himself with Edmonton in 2019-20, he averaged 21:58 minutes. With this contract, the hope is that he'll be able to get healthy and bounce back.

Do you remember why Edmonton let him go?

Not a bad return for a 5th round pick so far

Combined with the CHI-deal, actually quite pleased.

Just heard the 650 radio guys inform Stillman is eligible for the nickles/dimes buyout(under 25 yrs). Just 2 yrs of 200k

So we dumped Dickinson & picked up 2 good young skaters - not too shabby!

Yes, his buyout is $225k for 2 years, so a no brainer really.

Bear was a healthy scratch last night? Due to poor play in the coaches eye or the commments he made about the team? To set an example it should have been Myers getting scratched instead...

Or OEL. Stillman was terrible last game as well.
And why was Myers getting played with Quinn so much. It was a disaster every time they were on the ice together.

Not sure Stillman gets bought out. They continue to play him, so either they like something about his play or they're trying to boost his value for a TDL trade.

But if it does work out to be a cap clearing move, then yes it certainly helps to have that option. With that said, say we buy him out and replace him with Rathbone, the saving is really only about 1-1.5 million which is great, but a 2nd seems a bit steep still for that.

Buying him out would cost us $450k in total cap (225k x 2 years) sending him down to Abbotsford would only cost $200k total cap (1.35mil minus the 1.15mil buried salary). We would also have an NHL vet as a depth piece on the farm... or heaven forbid someone claims him:bigblush:

This trade looks great for us. The 2023 5th rounder is unlikely to amount to the impact that Bear + Pederson has done so far.

totally agree, great pro scouting...un like the still man situation but wy was Bear scratched? sucks trying to drive down his value for RFA negotiations?

Pederson alone was traded for a 4th round pick before. Crazy that Carolina also retained salary.

The Dickinson trade was annoying but its not like it was particularly bad value. Patrik Nemeth had 2 years / 2.5 per remaining and cost two second round picks to unload. Stillman, while he has kinda sucked, might have had some value as a young physical dman.

True, but Aquilini would have to pay his full salary while Stillman is in the minors for a year.  So, the buyout would be cheaper for the owner plus it frees up a spot for a younger guy to play in Abby.  Don't think we want Stillman taking up a spot in Abby for a year.  If he can show he can play at the NHL level for the rest of this year, then you keep him for another year.  If not, the buyout is a no brainer if they want to bring in someone else to replace him in the lineup.

Just let the contract expire and bury what you can in the minors.  Any kind of dead cap longer than one year is grounds for firing the entire management group.
