What is Your Offseason Wishlist/Priorities?

With this season starting to wind down and our extended training camp finalizing it's evaluations, I was wondering what everyone's offseason wishlist and priorities are.

Here are mine:

1. Clear cap space

To me this means first and foremost trading one of our redundant scoring wingers. Ideally it will be one of Garland or Boeser but Beauvillier also works if they can't find a suitor for one of the former.

2. Signing a 3C/Match-up C

I'm loving the idea of rolling Podkolzin and Kravstov together on our 3rd line next season but they need a better center to play with them. With Raty being possibly only one more year away I would be happy going with a vet on a one year contract to act as a mentor and defensive presence on this line. Someone like Haula if the Devils let him go would be ideal, but Lars Eller could also be a good one year option. Bjugstad might be a good cheap consideration and if management thinks Raty is more that 1 year out then going after someone like David Kampf on a multi-year deal could work great.

3. Continue addressing the defense

Unfortunately our defense is still a major work in progress. I only have it down at #3 because I think it will be the hardest to address. For starters I would love to see Myers traded at 50% retention this summer. It doesn't matter to me what the return is just the cap space. Following that, a lot depends on how Hronek looks once he gets a couple games in. If Hronek and Hughes show early chemistry it will make everything much easier. However, if it looks like they are better off being on different lines it still leaves a major hole next to Hughes. Regardless of whether Hughes and Hronek play together or not, I think the team should really look to bring in another top 4 defenseman. The RHD UFA class is pretty weak this year, but if it looks like we need to split up Hronek and Hughes, I would be interested in bringing in Mayfield as a multi-year stopgap to play with Hughes. On left left side, bringing in a Gavrikov or Graves would also help stabilize the defense. Mostly however, I don't want to see the Canucks overspend on the defense this offseason as I don't think there is a quick fix.

I don't think any of this suddenly makes the Canucks a playoff team next year, but it should make the team more competitive as well as aid the development of our younger players and put the team in a better position to make future deals/moves.

What are your priorities for the Canucks going into the offseason?

Give this current roster until December to prove they're worth adding pieces to. I wouldn't spend another penny, or trade a single pick until I can see that this team has the ability to perform consistently. If you can move money out without paying a sweetener price, you do that too.

1. arena DJ plays “It Takes Two to Make a Thing Go Right” after a goal for whoever takes #2 next season

2. arena DJ plays “Sucka MC’s” right after the ref makes a bad call against the Canucks

3. arena DJ plays “Call Me Maybe” after a missed call for VAN

Job 1- Open up cap space prior to the draft

-Trade Myers, will require retention (2Mil) and not return much

-Trade Garland, might have to retain 1 mil to acquire a 2nd

-Trade Pearson, probably have to retain half for future considerations

-Trade Poolmans LTIR contract.  I assume he is done, and someone will want the relief.

This opens up 12 million.

Job 2- Draft BPA

Job 3- Be active in the NCAA/Euro/Non qualified UFAs

Job 4- Sign our Players

-Re Sign- Wolanin, Juulsen, Burroughs, Di Guiseppe to two way deals, or they walk

-Re Sign Kravtsov, Bear to 1 way deals

-Dermott and Delia walk

UFA

-Sign Soucy to play with OEL

-Sign Graves to play with Hronek

-Sign an experienced back up that is on the tail end of their career to a shorter cheap deal ex. Quick, Andersen

-Sign the best defensive PK 3C we can get with our remaining $.

easy.

1. Clear cap space / clear out players.

2. Find a couple more defenders. Preferably stay home home ones.

3. Fill out the rest of the roster (forwards) as needed.

4. Look at back up goalie situation and address if needed.

5. Look at signing college / other free agent players.

6. Hopefully draft well no matter where we land.

7. Sign Petey long term.

At least 2 big contracts off the wing.
A young legit matchup D man. Preferably right shot.
A young second line centre

A young third Line centre

Accruing pics and not trading them away.
One of Myers or OEL gone without a buyout without violating previous desire. (It is a wish list)

At least a couple weeks at the lake. But that is more my off-season plan.

Pretty much this.
Boeser/ Garland/ Myers (next TDL) for #1, Bear/ Livingstone, maybe another RHD for #2 if the NCAA FA needs more developing time, let the ELC wings fight for middle-6 spots and see what we have in Raty for 3rd C, if not then let him marinate longer in Abbotsford and get a defensive 3rd C.  For goalies I think we've got a good bunch of darts in our goalie quiver (Delia, Martin, Silovs all have had stretches of playing well) so whoever plays well can be rewarded with spot starts behind Demko IMO.  Also hoping we don't draft another winger for point #6.  1000000000000000000000% for #7.

For those saying retain on Myers, do you really think keeping any of the 1 mil owed will make a difference? If a team is willing to get Myers, they’d take him for the full 1 mil in salary he costs next year. No need to retain anything.

Yes, yes it will.  It's a cap world after all, and it showed in this past trade deadline (e.g., Pittsburgh tossed a pick to Montreal for them to take on $1.025 million of Bonino's cap hit, same with Minnesota brokering to take on around $2 million in two different trades, and there's several more of those.  Fact of the matter is, teams need to make the cap fit so any saving would be explored).

Bring in players who want to be here and who you intend to keep.  Build a team the right way.  Build a team that wants to win for each other and isn't full of players worried about being traded.  We will get nowhere with a revolving door of others teams players.

The priority should be the defense. That's it. There're more than enough forwards on this team that can make an impact. I'd say keep Hronek and Hughes on separate lines and pair them each with a steady and capable defensive defenseman. Graves and Severson make sense.

The fourth line could use a crash and bang type player, perhaps Milan Lucic to play with Dakota and Nils? He'll be coming off of his big contract, and could possibly be had for cheap.
