$11.64 million right now, UFA at season's end.  Zero cap space to retain him and he sure as hell won't take a pay cut to stay in Toronto when he is a UFA in a year.

 

He will either get flipped asap to Arizona for a massive haul knowing he'll go there anyways, or they'll do the stupid thing and wait until the TDL hoping for the best then flip him for peanuts ala Patty kane

Matthews has a no-move clause that kicks in on July 1, 2023, and that's the first date the Leafs can negotiate an extension. Funny how Sportsnet refuses to highlight this fact even though it’s less than two months away. They’ll be stuck with him and he’ll walk for nothing straight into UFA.

So, in theory the Canucks have similar or possibly better odds of winning Bedard or Fantilli than the Leafs do of even making it to game 7
