DrJockitch
Haha, he is awful. Subtraction by addition. Chiarelli really is making some terrible moves. Watching this guy work explains a lot about why JBs trades and signings have been so questionable.

billabong
God that's awful for a 3rd pair guy who has horrible analytics
IBacon Strips
Don't really see why the oilers wanted to commit this kind of money for a borderline #5, he doesn't even bring any physical presence. They really should've just targeted Sbisa from LGK and resigned him to low 3, high 2.
coryberg
Front loaded with a NTC for the lean years? This for a player who was basically the last one to sign last year? Madness
BananaMash
Russel is regularly one of the most overrated defenders in the league. Not a good contract for what he brings.

Sure he's proven to be a # 5/6 defensman who will block shots. You don't pay 16mil over 4 years for that. This is worse than the Sbisa contract. BCNate
This is what a steady NHL dman costs these days. He wasn't going to sign for $2.5mil.

Rick Blight
CDC is still upset that Dallas chose Russell over Hamhuis. Russell is actually a pretty good d-man that played all year on the Oiler's second D pairing , not a 3rd pair d-man as many here suggest. He is a shot blocking machine, led the league in total blocked shots and blocked shots per game by quite a margin. He has led the league in blocked shots per game for the past three seasons and has been 1st or 2nd in total blocked shots for the same period. He skates well, moves the puck well and,as you would expect from a bull rider, is a lot tougher than many here give him credit for. There was a reason the Oilers really wanted to lock him up for another 4 seasons.
