Juolevi undergoes successful surgery:

Quote

The Vancouver Canucks announced today that Olli Juolevi has undergone successful knee surgery and is expected to make a full recovery for training camp.

After thorough evaluation, rest and conservative treatment, surgery was determined by Canucks medical staff, in consultation with specialists, as the best option for Juolevi's long-term health and career.

The surgery was successfully performed today with an estimated return to play timeline of six months.

This isn't good. I hope this doesn't effect his play long term. I still think he is very underrated, and isn't appreciated more by fans because of the style he plays and the guy drafted after him. I think a healthy Juolevi can one day be 40+ point d-man in the NHL, but now with these injuries, we likely won't see the best of Juolevi which is too bad. Again, even if there is a redo in the 2016 draft, I still DON'T want Tkachuk. Never liked him even when I was browsing through all the prospects available.

Kind of did. You're inferring that it was a bad pick....yes ? no ?

I liked the pick at the time and I hope OJ will become a player as he is still young. When you look at guy like Chabot it can take time. It’s not a secret though that this pick could have gone better.

Not a bust, but certainly a bad pick at #5. This injury will exasperate his lack of value further. I get why fans lament his development given what was available when he was drafted. For most I think it isn't about not liking Juolevi, it's about disliking the pick and knowing what we could have had. Certainly not the kids fault he got drafted where he did, nor that he is injured again.

All those that justify this pick with the mantra "defensemen take longer to develop" are conveniently forgetting that there were at least three other defensemen taken after Juolevi (within next 11 picks) in the same draft class who will have played at least 200 NHL games before Juolevi even gets a sniff. What rebuilding team can afford to leave 200+ player-games on the table?

He may be a good NHL player one day...maybe even very good...but his body of work will never catch up to Sergachev's, MacAvoy's, or Chychrun's by that time.

I wish him well, but I am not expecting anything from him. If I am wrong than it will be a bonus! :)

Kinda odd how they said he would be back after several weeks and mentioned several times how it was a minor issue.

My guess they thought it was based upon how OJ responded to rehab and a bit of rest but a torn MCL or ACL (which sounds like it is the case given the timeframe off) can be surprisingly unpainful and even, if you are strong enough with rest of leg structure, something that is hard to be 100% sure of without MRI (if partial or even near fully torn).   Clearly he wasn't getting better so they either MRI'd him or did ortho and noticed something.....either way, it happens that nagging things were due to something more serious.    Seen it before, will see it again.
