[Proposal] Offensive Defenseman? MDZ.

Recommended Posts

In the VERY UNLIKELY (yes, I know) scenario that we lose both Sbisa (expansion) and Edler/Tanev (trade) this offseason we have a spot up for grabs. We're also a team that could use some offensive support from the back end (PP specialist, anyone?). The Flyers have decided not to bring back Del Zotto. Throwing him money on a one year deal would give us a boost offensively next season while not tying us down either, we could flip him to a contender at the deadline for a late pick as well if he manages to perform for us.

Pairings:

Hutton - Tanev

Tryamkin - Stecher

MDZ - Gudbranson

or

Edler - Stecher

Tryamkin - Hutton

MDZ- Gudbranson

Not most trustworthy lineup, but at the least we'll be able to roll a number of balanced pairings who'll be able to defend and provide offense in some capacity.

I'm interested in seeing it, but I don't see Juolevi playing in the NHL next year. 9 games at most unless he's way better than expected.

If they lose Sbisa to expansion, I think the odds of moving a defenseman are lower because depth would be hurt.

I have had my doubts all along whether Benning would break up the top pairing.  They shelter and anchor the whole D corps.  Having said that, if they don't move Edler or Tanev, who would they move?  Hutton?  Guddy?  This is the long term 2nd pair imo.

Fair enough. As long as they don't try to make a play for someone like Shattenkirk, but JB & Co. have already come out saying they're looking at signing role players.

Canucks probably do not have the cap space.  They need to move more than just Sbisa if they want to bring back Miller.

nucks have 17.5 million in cap space

need to sign bo, gud, and miller if they want him to return

no other high value players needing to be resigned

and they will lose 1 existing contract to las vegas

(could be sbisa and his 3.6million hit)

Not signing players in the hopes that prospects that are not likely to be NHL ready make the team is a foolish way to go about the off-season.

Sign free-agents, and if a prospect takes a job, you can make room for him one way or another, and now you have extra depth.

Signing veterans to 1-year deals is always a good idea for rebuilding teams.

I like the part about flipping him for picks the best. Could show up motivated too.

MDZ battled his ass off this year and last.

To save his NHL career.  He has a little left in him it appeared. When put on the spot?

But not that much!

Pass!  Would have been better than Weber last year, when both were free agents...  We just don't need him at this point.

I like your 1st pairing set. MDZ is a good point producer when he's healthy, its just he's not often all that healthy. He's only going to be 27 next season so he's probably looking for the "big one" in terms of the next contract. My bet is the Oilers throw way too much money and term at him in free agency.
