MacEwen and Bailey are on the cusp of getting NHL games. Plus there's a high possibility we see a winger or two get waived and potentially sent down as well. Then he's competing with the likes of Jasek and Gadjovich for time amongst younger players. I'm not worried about competition amongst Utica's own roster. The AHL is a developmental league - that's why the Canucks have Utica in their organization. Young kids like Lind aren't going to be benched because of cast-offs like LE or Schaller or whoever else gets waived and sent down. JB and Green know that the only way kids like Lind and Gajo develop is if they play regularly in all situations.

You have to beat out the competition for minutes. It's works that way at the big club and should be the same right through Utica. Utica has paying fans as well and they want to see wins. So they need to build a competitive team as well which in turns allows the best development should those plays earn the spots that contribute to winning. If they don't, then they need to improve to get there. Guys like Lind might not be benched but if he wants the top productive minutes, he will need to produce. JB and Green have always talked about earning spots. 2

This is said every year and then every year fans get pissy because guys like LE or Schaller, if they do get sent down, end up getting lots of ice time because the AHL coach wants to win every game and those players simply are better than our prospects for the most part.

UticaHockey
I like this. Maybe I'm over thinking it but I see this as a positive step. A statement that this is his team and how well he and his team performs will determine his opportunity to advance to the next level. So many kids that are hyped in juniors think they will step right into the NHL and forget that it takes hard work in the AHL first.

Dube scored 39 points in 37 AHL games. Strange how that works sometimes. The Comets weren't exactly a great place for anyone last year as they had to deal with injuries to the Canucks, but also to their own roster. Kind is a long, long way from being a write off.

They had to be rated pretty close as Hague was a projected mid first rounder on a lot of lists. Dman vs winger, you should always good with Dman if rated similarly. A Dman with a cannon of a shot is something we still severely lack. I wanted Hague too. Big d man that racked a lot of points and has a mean streak. Can't have enough d men in the system. Picking Woo in the second the following draft have me some relief. Lind was injured and finished way, way better.
dpn1
I love those sweaters. The one they used to honor those who were wounded or killed in action (Purple Heart Recipients) was an amazing sweater as well. There is an article on the Comet's website about how they are the first Hockey team to be recognized by the Purple Heart Hall. Encouraging to see how they have supported Vets in this way. Popular Post CRAZY_4_NAZZY
https://theprovince.com/sports/hockey/ben-kuzma-lind-gadjovich-need-to-turn-competitive-corner-with-comets?utm_term=Autofeed&utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1567983786 Quote Hotshot second-round 2017 draft picks Lind and Gadjovich had tough transition to the pro game Kole Lind and Jonah Gadjovich are connected by development camp stalls, tough transitions to the pro game and increased scrutiny. It comes with having their way as hotshot juniors, being 2017 second-round draft picks by the Vancouver Canucks and enduring the school of hard knocks with the AHL affiliate Utica Comets. Lind suffered a ligament tear in his elbow in the sixth game and was sidelined for nearly two months. That was followed by an MCL (medial collateral ligament) knee sprain in the second half of the season and he needed a late push just to gain traction, trust and confidence. The former WHL standout, who had a 39-goal season with the Kelowna Rockets, needed 26 games to score his first pro goal and would finish with just 17 points (5-12) in 51 games. He now needs to stay healthy and put up some numbers. Gadjovich had to improve his pace and battle level to earn ice time and just 10 points (4-6) in 43 outings was a real eye-opener. The big winger, who could easily impose his will in the OHL where he had a 46-goal season with the Owen Sound Attack, learned the pro game is a business and it’s a fine line between being in the lineup or the press box. Indifferent play is one thing. Injuries are something else, especially when you’re Lind and trying to make the right first pro impression. “I was playing a lot better at the end of the year and what I took from other guys is don’t be too hard on yourself,” the 6-foot-1, 191 pound Lind said Sunday. “I was pretty hard on myself at the beginning of the year and struggling and putting yourself down even more doesn’t help at all. “Even the elbow injury was weird. I was going into a battle in the corner and I got pressured from one side and a guy cut me off the other way and I kind of hyperextended my arm. “You have to try and stay positive as much as you can and get all the encouragement you can. Obviously, with social media these days, a lot of people tend do give it to players when they don’t make the transition right away. I try to stay away from it as much as I can, but it’s pretty hard to dodge stuff. “I got to know myself better and a lot of maturing with that as well.” Lind leaned on minor-league veterans like Wacey Hamilton, 28, and Carter Bancks, 30, to understand the process of doing something to get better every day. And even watching how the well-travelled Reid Boucher, 26, who had 31 goals last season with the Comets to earn another one-year Canucks extension, keeps his career going resonated with Lind. “He had an unbelievable season and I learned you can’t just let 60-point guys go,” added Lind. “You have to earn your ice time and something he (coach Trent Cull) got across early was that we have to learn the little parts of the game that you don’t see in junior. You have to be aware all the time — especially when you don’t have the puck.” Vancouver Canucks prospect Jonah Gadjovich attempts to screen the goalie on a drill at Rogers Arena on Saturday. Jason Payne / PNG Gadjovich is buoyed by getting over back and wrist injuries and having a full summer to train. It allowed the 6-foot-2, 203 pound winger to get a little leaner and quicker through specific training and power skating. And because maintaining pace will be his challenge at the pro level, he believes he now has a leg up on next season. “I have really high expectations to do a lot better because I have a lot of goals in mind,” said Gadjovich. “And the organization has high expectations as well and they want me to take some big steps and I feel ready.” More ready than he was a year ago. “It was tougher than I thought and kind of took me by surprise,” admitted Gadjovich. “It’s just the intensity. You go from playing against guys who are younger to guys who are 30 years old with two kids. They’re men and fighting to feed their families and pay for their houses. “It took me time to adjust because by the end of the season, I was able to keep up to the pace of play and started playing my game again, so that was exciting to build some momentum.” In a game that has trended away from size and placed more of a premium on skill, it’s a crucial season for Gadjovich to deliver on franchise faith. There’s always a balancing act with affiliates to develop a winning culture and develop prospects. The optics can get fuzzy, but for Gadjovich the picture is clear. “You have to earn every second out there because guys are coming in and out all year,” he said. “You have to have that narrow mindset and just focus on your own game and take it day by day. I stuck with it and put in a lot of extra work. “That’s what got me through.” AHL veterans are important to prospect development. To those who were getting their pants in a knot last year because Hamilton and Bancks got ice time, need to understand they are good examples to guys like Gadj and Lind. 3 1 2

If you don't have the veteran presence, how would they be able to measure themselves? And, as can clearly be seen, The veterans help these youngsters understand and overcome the obstacles they meet during their transition. Very well spoken by Gadjovich... Really rooting for these kids to to take a giant leap over the next couple of years.

Those same people need to realize that the AHL isn't a prospect showcase. It's a developmental league. You develop by doing what it takes to beat out the competition (sounds awfully familiar to what management has been saying along to those that care to listen). If you can overcome the challenges in the AHL, then you will have a much easier time getting to the NHL and sticking. If the idea is to just give the prospects with big minutes and they will figure it out, then might as well do that at the NHL level too. 3
