To be honest he has been completely off my radar until recently. The more I see the more I like. Austin Matthews was a few days shy of being eligible for the previous draft as well. I don't really read too much into birthdays kids develop at different rates the most important thing is seeing a consistent progression. Last year he played with Zadina this year he is proving he too can be a driver. He's a big kid and skates well seems to have above average IQ can both score and put the puck on a T there are so many reasons to like him. I'm surprised he isn't ranked higher. Only ISS and Canucks army have him in their top 10 at 10 and 8 respectively http://www.mynhldraft.com/2019-nhl-draft/2019-nhl-draft-rankings/.  I will be watching him more closely. I'm a sucker for a PWF prospect.

I wouldn’t mind picking Lavioe around 8 downward, but for such a high pick in the top 10, a lot of people will say he’s an very underwhelming prospect at that range.

He’s pretty much an exact carbon copy of Anthony Mantha.

whose the Top LW in the draft? We need an elite 1 LW

Pavel Dorofeyev could very well become the best LW out of this draft class. It's a pretty close race between him and Matthew Boldy, even though I expect Boldy going to be selected earlier than Dorofeyev. Haven't heard Dorofeyev's name on this thread so far. He completely flies under the radar playing in Russia in his draft year whereas Boldy gets a lot of attention playing in north america.

Anyone know much about a LW from Prince George Cougars named Josh Maser? He hits like a truck and wins fights. He's also scored some goals. Might be a 4th line NHL kind of guy.

Possible 5th round pick?

Josh Maser

I see talk about 'reaching' for a D, but Soderstrom isnt a reach at 9-12. Hes a better player now than Boqvist was last year. Whoever takes him is getting a real good D prospect.

I suppose it’s fair to quibble about the use of “reach” if you’re talking about our pick... which is likely 9-10 not 12 where Soderstrom is slotted iirc. I’m just banking on one of the higher rated kids falling to us... and the fact there’s some highly thought of forwards in that range as well.

In all fairness, I’d love Soderstrom too but it really feels like we take another forward here.

As as an aside, positionally, we’re pretty starved for RD in the system after Woo but at this point JB needs to fill that through a trade or FA IMO.  If we take Soderstrom it’s because JB thinks he’s the clear cut BPA at our pick and that, again, seems unlikely if we’re at 1-2 like 112 has guaranteed.

I also wonder if we win one of the top 2 picks if Benning would shock the NHL world positionally hunting and picks Byram over Hughes or Kakko.

I had a very similar thought last night. What if the Canucks get the #2, and everyone assumes Benning would take Kakko. But what if he took Byram instead? As much as I like Byram, I would be shocked and disappointed.

Odds are really low getting the 1st overall or even the 2nd overall. Pretty good summary written by Ben Kuzma from the Province. Players who might be availabe at #9 are also included with a short description.

Yeah, I read that this morning. There's something about Zegras I'm not a fan of. I have watched video, but from what I've seen he's got decent height, but gets pushed around, bumped off the puck, he loses puck battles. I highly doubt Turcotte is still around at #9. Caufield could be an interesting, exciting player. Canucks need scoring, this guy is a sniper with quick hands.

Those are really underwhelming numbers for a 20 year old

Weird ur quote wasn’t a quote of what I said? Was what flickyoursedin said!

I’m pretty confident the highest byram would be on our board is 3/4.

Mantha was alot better goal scorer. He was a goal scoring machine in the Q. Lavoie doesnt have as good a shot as Mantha.

Soderstrom's rankings on most recent draft lists:

#11 on B.Mckenzie - TSN (Apr 4th)

#11 on Future Considerations (Mar 5th)

#12 on HockeyProspect.com (Feb 28th)

#13 on ISS (April 3rd)

#10 on McKeen's. (According to elite prospects, not sure if thats most recent)

Worth nothing McKenzie has Broberg #10 & HP has Seider #11.

So there are D considered around that #10 spot. Its not exactly a Juolevi situation.

What exactly is "a Juolevi situation"?

Bob McKenzie had him at #6 and as I'm sure you know, his list is made using the opinions and rankings from 10 NHL scouts. He was never an off the board pick.

https://www.tsn.ca/matthews-goes-wire-to-wire-as-tsn-s-top-prospect-1.511597

Broberg or Soderstrom clearly wouldn't be off the board in the 9-12 spot this year either. U18s will offer the opportunity to see Soderstrom and Broberg play together, likely on a pairing. That will be an excellent tool to evaluate them against each other, as well as against other potential top 15 picks in the tournament.

I'm most excited to watch Broberg and Podkolzin. They were easily the 2 best 2019 draft eligible players in the 2018 Hlinka Gretzky Cup to start off the season. Both have undoubtedly been riding the wave from that tournament when it comes to their draft rankings. I believe a poor U18 tournament from either player could really affect their draft stock and wouldn't be surprised to see them slide significantly in rankings. If they both dominate the tournament like they did the Hlinka Gretzky, it will lock then in as top picks.

Kinda like the immediate reaction after Pettersson was selected.

I doubt Benning would pick Byram to fill a position of need (Hughes, Juolevi, Rathbone, etc) so if he does get picked then Benning and crew genuinely believe he's the better player. With said said, I doubt it happens anyway.
