What the team doesn't need is a panicked Benning trade

Right now Benning is panicking and looking around desperately for some way to save his backside.

This is exactly what the organization does not need.

Having a fire sale on Virtanen and getting some throwaway player in return is not going to solve the team's problems.

This season is already in the toilet... let's not throw away the future.

What is needed:

-  Fire Green and get a decent coach in.

-  Get Tryamkin signed

-  Look for free agent defensive prospects and give give them tryouts... check Europe too.

-  Give Woo a try.

I agree with you Buzzsaw we shouldn’t panic and make a trade that would do us no good. As far as what this team needs is a new attitude, leaders to step up and play some competitive hockey. Make the changes in the off-season. Nothings gonna fix a shortened season imo. Keep the assets. If they want to make something outta this season EVERYONE has to step up

Give Woo a try??

Both Chatfield and Rafferty are further in their development and they are getting exposed left and right.

This is good, yes. A playoff spot is still well within reach. Plus the top players Demko, Pettersson and Hughes are still very young. Just stick with it, and if not this year, by next year you will be a contender. Not sure what else is available for coaches right now. How would you feel about Guy Boucheron?

Agreed.

The problem with this team is beyond the players. The problem is the players aren't getting motivation from their 'motivator'.

We had a good run last year, but systematically we were still p*ss poor (stagnant PP, outshot every game, no physicality). Our sucess last year came from individual efforts & skill - Marky, Miller, Pettersson, Hughes. Top talent players can thrive in any system because they have the skill... This year the team has lost some key players, therefore our top guys have less support, and they have to compensate for others (especially defensively).

Travis truly hasn't had a great system from the get go. We never really had an identity under him. He needs to go and be replaced by a competent coach who will drive the bus for these guys. Bringing in 1 or 2 players will not solve the bigger picture.

He played one game and really didn’t look good unfortunately. Man they should have kept playing OJ. Ugh

I'm really getting a bad feeling that OJ & Virtanen will be packaged.

Id be okay with Virtanen leaving, but OJ is still so ripe.

Furthermore, replying to the OP - a trade involving OJ would be a knee jerk reaction to the bigger picture we have here in Canuck Land.

My own feeling is that the guys have a bit of a hangover from last years run, combined with dealing with the loss of Marky, Tanev and TT. The game we played against the Jets is how we should be playing but the team switch hasn't been thrown yet to get back to that game. I do expect that will happen, just hasn't happened yet.

I think Virtanen for someone like a Bennett is exactly what this team needs. As it solves our lack of a good 3rd line center problem while bringing in a fresh face into the locker room. This is a logical trade, since Bennett has been a beast in playoffs and he was ranked higher than Virtanen during the draft. Plus he is still the 18 year old Sam Bennett.

If you don't trust the GM anymore to not do a panic trade and essentially don't trust anything he's going to do now. You don't leave him in the position to do so.

Fire Benning. Let the new GM decide on Green and the rest of the staff and any ensuing trades.

Completely agree, unless it's a cap dump of Roussel or Eriksson, trades aren't going to save us. We're good on paper, we're scoring nice goals, but that defensive structure needs help because everyone's floundering in it.

Change coaching systems, Green and Baumer either change it themselves or they're out.

Tryamkin would be nice but think he's a pipedream for the fans.

We have the defenders to play good defence. Edler looks solid still, only beaten by McDavid and Spezza on 1 on 1 goals so far but he should be a 3rd or 4th D man right now and used accordingly due to his speed.

Myers is in his prime and a serviceable top 4 20 minute defenceman on any team in this league.

Schmidt was Vegas and Washington's 2nd best defenceman, racking up points and playing hard physically on good teams. People may say he was sheltered, but he was playing on offensive teams with offensive defencemen and was the rock, a big reason why they succeeded rather than the other way around.

Hughes is better offensively this season, worse defensively.

Chatfield and Juolevi look like solid 6-7th defencemen capable of playing 15 minutes.

Hamonic was in Calgary's top 4 last season, ended on their bottom pairing and looked solid in the games he played for us.

Each defender has lots of quality, but put in this strange system with no support and no defensive awareness and they're looking like idiots. Green and Baumgartner need to change their system and stop sticking to their guns because in this offensive-minded NHL, they're getting exposed.

Yeah, Anthony in the first intermission sorta talked about the sitting back approach which provides easy zone entries by the opposition....

He played one game for us this year for sure ... unless your not counting that one because he was pretty bad - although agree might as well give him more reps - could have just been nerves.

Giving up Virtanen is the least of the team's worries.

A panic trade more looks like Kevin Shattenkirk for Virtanen, Podkolzin, and a 1st

What if Shattenkirk was swapped for Seth Jones???  Could be that towering RD to maybe stabilize things for Quinn or enable him to sit on easier minutes.
