We don't HAVE to clear his cap like VGK did. And contrary to CDC's poor opinion of him in a one off, horrible season. He still has trade value as a top 4 D under a decent contract. So yes, I'd expect a return.

I wonder if he’d waive to go to Buffalo for Rhino?

Our roster isn't very good, so there aren't a lot of names that SHOULDN'T be on the block in an effort to retool some of the lines and pairings.

Schmidt is a good player, he just may not be the right complement to the existing pieces we have.  If you can leverage our extra protection slots and trade for a better fit before expansion, and then extract extract value for him after expansion why not try?

It looks like in the not too distant future we might have Hughes and Rathbone on the left side in our top 4, each needing a big physical stay at home D partner. Schmidt doesn't really fill that bill, and honestly Myers is pretty iffy in that regard and is more of an average all around player vs. being a defensive specialist.

This year's 1st rounder, Schmidt, DiPietro, and Juolevi seem to be our best (only) trade chips where what they could bring back could be worth more than the hole they create in the organization.  I fully expect at least a couple of those pieces to not be with the club by the time next year's starting lineup is announced.

Assuming we can sign Edler and Hamonic as stop gaps, then we really just need: to create some cap space; a top 4RD; and a 3C (or if we can't find that, a top 6 winger so that Miller can move to centre)...maybe a bottom 6 winger but that can be found on the waiver wire during training camp really as better teams trim their rosters.

I wonder if coaches management have already seen enough to make Schmidt expendable to fill holes elsewhere...?

Hughes, Larsson?

Juolevi, Hamonic?

Rathbone, Myers

Edler

For next year?

I would be very weary of having 3 very inexperienced Left shot D, even if Edler returned in a lower role, it just seems that sort of construction is asking for trouble defensively.

Love the potential for Hughes, Juolevi, and Rathbone but having all of them on the left side in one season would be very very risky.

True, but Schmidt was playing the right side.

I keep thinking with Shaw in the coaching mix then we will see a whole new side of Schmidt this season.

I just don;t think he was utilized to his strenths last season the same way Vegas was able to.

Then why is Baumer still here?

I just don’t see how going with the same D coach makes sense.

Did we actually bring Shaw in to coach Baumer? Why not just give him the reigns?

I guess I don;t know, the whole coaching situation is pretty unclear to mst but I think Shaw will help with the total team defense concept ir something ofthe like.

I just don’t get that though. If Baumers system is the problem, is Shaw going to tell him to change it?

Why would the players listen to Baumer anymore? Hopefully Shaws is the only voice when it comes to defensive zone systems.

Shaw seems like a smart guy and for sure will influence things.   Last year was just a gong show.   But we did see, without EP, that the team was capable of winning the majority of the games for a stretch which is hopefully what we do next season with EP, the addition of Podz and some further tweaks.   Teams going to be in transition for awhile yet.

In think Shaw and Green are going to tell him to change it and/or implement it better.

Regardless of system a LOT of our problems came down to extremely poor execution. Gap control, puck support, forward support, playing as a 5 man unit etc.

Even if they didn't change a thing with our systems, if you improve those elements, we're already WAY ahead of last year. Tweaks to systems on top of that and we should be WAY ahead.

So if they improve everything without changing anything they'll be better. Then if they change everything they'll be even better?

Great situation for Shaw…he is sitting in the saddle…there is Baumer to cushion the fall.

I think the sense I got after reading all the press releases and watching all the video was that Baumer has been with the club for like 20 years or something and the players like him so he was retained in a "coaching" role, however Shaw has been hired to run the defence. Now what Baumer's role will be we'll see but I think he's just there out of loyalty and his role will be reduced or modified.

No we dont have to spend 6 mill for every defenseman on the team.

No, but with the CDN/BC income tax rate, we’ll always need to overspend or provide more term (unfortunately). A nice view of the sea is nice but not when you could have an extra $500K in Florida, Vegas, etc.
