Broadcaster calls Canucks coach Bruce Boudreau a 'moron' who doesn't know rules

During the final third of the NHL calendar, a lot of games often feel like they blend together, but sometimes even the broadcast booth tries to find a competitive edge. Perhaps Tampa Bay Lightning colour commentator Bobby Taylor went too far.

Tampa Bay held a 2-1 lead against the Vancouver Canucks during the third period on Monday night and it appeared that the Canucks had found a break. Lightning defenceman Jan Rutta was initially penalized for high-sticking Canucks forward Tyler Motte, but upon review, the call was overturned as Rutta was ruled to have been following through on a shot.

As one would expect, Canucks head coach Bruce Boudreau protested the call. This didn’t seem to sit well with Taylor.

“You never ask the players or the coach the rules, they don’t know it,” Taylor said as the broadcast cut to Boudreau pleading his case for the original call to be upheld. It was a weird thing for Taylor — who won two Stanley Cups with the Philadelphia Flyers in the 1970s — to say, but OK.

“It’s a follow-through you moron, it’s been that way since 1940,” Taylor followed up.

Boudreau is certainly bombastic and has shared a few malapropisms with the media, but we’re not ready to call him a moron on the basis of trying to get a call to go his way.

The Lightning ended up holding on for the 2-1 victory as they try to chase down the Florida Panthers for the top spot in the Atlantic Division. Meanwhile, the Canucks fell three points back of the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference.

This isn’t the first time Taylor has called someone a moron. A hat-tip to the sleuths on Reddit, who unfurled this 2015 clip where he also used the term to describe Montreal Canadiens fans.

It's an effective insult, I guess, but perhaps Taylor should chill. It’s just another game in March, after all.

Pretty standard for a coach to try and get a call to favour his team.

Shouldn't be a surprise to the commentator.

most of the time the coach knows that the call won't be overturned, but it MAY influence the refs as to the NEXT close call.

Sounds like a Bruins commentator wannabe.

Some people in media try too hard to play the jerk or the “bad guy” these days.

Sensationalist media at its finest. It’s not who’s smartest it’s who’s loudest. Shouldn’t be surprised coming from someone from Trump country Florida.

Shouldn't the league be trying to get rid of this trash?

Should they? .... maybe.

Will they? .... Not a chance, if it could possible help increase viewership. Just watch a bruins game with local commentators if you want evidence of that. As long as it can increase revenue for the league and help bring get fans into the game in non-hockey markets I think the NHL is all over it. I'm actually a bit surprised we don't have more loud mouth biased commentators out there trying to create them vs. us mentalities across the league.

Yet motte got a high sticking penalty (a few gamesago$ and he wasn’t even holding the stick…. Shenn got a cross checking penalty with only ONE hand in his stick.
Lol. Know the rules the refs don’t even know the rules.
Was this “broadcaster” complaining about the quick whistle when the puck wasn’t even covered.
Me thinks this broadcaster took to many hits to the head

im sure cooper has never argued with the refs over a similar situations.

Broadcasting just like ever profession

there’s professionals that are respected and insightful

and then unfortunately there’s people like this garbage.

Very rude tbh.

Glad we have Shorthouse and Garrett, our guys are classy.

Garrett's an idiot, but not to the epic proportions of Bobby Taylor, the guy who got to play all of 45 minutes during the two years of Flyers Cup run.  Taylor wasn't even good enough to carry Bernie Parent's jock.  At least Garrett was in a fortuitous position to play in an All Star Game.

I thought Bobby Taylor was dead of old age.  He's so irrelevant he may as well be.

Sounds like we're getting some respect. I have to chuckle at the people upset by another team's broadcast. Why would we really care about another team's set-up? It caters to their fans. To me all it says it we got their announcer to lose his cool a bit in a close game. It means it was a big game to them and they were worried about the result.
