It also does nothing to address the fact that this is one of the deepest drafts in recent memory and we needed all the draft picks we had....

I don't care so much about that.  The isles pick probably won't see the NHL for at least three years, if at all.

What an unbelievably terrible trade.

All the good work in the last few trades flushed away.

You prove yourself as a mastermind one more time.

So you rather let Petey and Hughes wait five more years for the draft picks to develop?

This is a master mind thingy by PA so you should cheer instead.

There are more deals in the works. :P

I bet the cap will be addressed shortly.

There has to be.  I wouldn't be surprised to see them completely revamp their roster in the next 36 hours

The 1st RHD isn’t a stay at home player anyway.

Is it some sort of confision what we need?

I mean, Hughes is our 1LD, ideally you'd have someone who plays more a stay at home style with him so as to free him up to play rover

Guess we'll see what else they do

Burden of proof is on you.....do you know he won't?

Cap situation will be different tin 2 years and cap will likely go up + more moves made by then. They don't make this trade unless they think they can.

LOL...no he won't

Aside from potential Aquilini-Rutherford puppet theories, this approach is being taken because this team now revolves around Pettersson and Hughes.

Drafting a bunch of RHD in this year's draft class requires 2-3 years to be ready for the NHL and then probably another 1-2 to become effective NHL'ers - assuming they even pan out.

If everything goes well, Pettersson and Hughes will be pushing 30 by then and Miller/OEL will be past their primes.

I understand the team is in shambles and we're in no position to compete, but how long are we going to take rebuild when Pettersson and Hughes are already in their prime?

A team that is committed to rebuilding can choose to keep their core or let it go.  LA is a prime example of a team that stuck to a rebuild and kept their core.  The cup vets helped turned things around faster than expected, and even with some guys gone (Quick/Brown), Kopitar/Doughty are seeing this one through.

If it makes people feel any better.

I just asked how Detroit fans think of the trade. They have mixed emotions about it as well. Because it leaves a hole on the RHD.

So a trade no one is happy with?

Ok. My argument was that a cap dump should of least went the other way. Like Myers. This is a brutal trade. I can't defend it.

He hopefully played his last game in 2023; he needs to heal and rest up for 23/24. Once again, what has he been playing through all year? We completely destroyed our D early due to this FO's inaction. OEL and Myers are better players than they have showed since Nov.

OEL can't play with Hughes or with Hronek.  He's either on the 3rd pairing or he's not on the team.  Pretty simple really.  Is JR going let him take up $7.26 million in cap space to play 3rd pairing minutes?  Is Aquilini gonna pay him $10.5 million (his next year's salary) to play on the 3rd pairing?
