Subban's weaknesses were his height and poor defensive play obviously. Hughes has far better positional awareness in his own zone. He's smart enough to overcome his size defensively, IMO. 2
Ossi Vaananen
YEHAWWW I was like wtf at first, but i'm down with this. He needs to add weight, but playing in the world championships as an 18 y/o he proved he can play with the bigs. So is it another year in the NCAA, or does he sign after development camp?
Noseforthenet
Has anybody ever seen Jim Benning this excited?! He wasn't even this excited about Petterson and he is looking outstanding. I get the feeling he absolutely nailed this one. Also f@(€!ng Sportsnet trying to jinx us with that Stojanov mention. Why ya gotta be like that?! 1

Quinn Hughes has elite IQ, elite puck skills, elite skating, and is hyper competitive. 2

Rindiculous
Dammit kind of disappointed Zadina didn't drop one more spot, but I'm excited for Hughes and this is the first time ever that I will hop on team tank for Jack next year.

Quinn, just get the puck up ice and get it to Brock and EP. 3 hours ago, Odd. said: This guy's potential is insane. 2nd best defenseman in the draft I am very happy with this outcome. It was better than expected. Obviously, I never though Hayton would go so early. I don't see how Arizona passed on Zadina, in which case Detroit was have likely taken Hughes. Then I think the Canucks would have taken Dobson, which would have made me happy, but Hughes is a better prospect. So far, the book on Dobson is that he is a very safe pick, very likely to be a least top 4 but probably with a ceiling as a #2 guy. Hughes, on the other hand, is thought to have a ceiling as a #1 D, and is arguably the best skater in the entire draft. Hughes has already shown that he is probably better than Cale Makar, the first D taken last year [correction: 2nd D taken, at #4 overall, -- thanks to @Warhippy.] He has been great in the NCAA and was pretty good at the IIHF World Championships -- which is a similar quality to the NHL. Frankly, Hughes could probably help the Canucks this year, although I assume that both he and the Canucks would probably prefer him to go back to Michigan this season. peaches5
If Zadina fell and Hughes was still there I think JB still would have taken Hughes. 1

Just overall alot better hockey player. Subban draft year: 51 points, 68 games, 0.75 PPG in the OHL Hughes draft year: 29 points, 37 games, 0.78 PPG in the NCAA. And Hughes played in World Championships against best players in the world.

His skating ability is insane, offensive tools and his IQ all over the ice is so high. The question is how he will defend in the NHL against big bodies. But he's so smart and his defensive skill isn't bad at all. The ceiling on this kid is definitely something. Great pick. Now we better get Tryamkin back to pair up with this kid.
Odd.
Going to be refreshing seeing a defenseman that can skate with the puck. Hughes is going to be the play driver for this core.
