To be honest he doesn't deserve to be cut. Putting aside all the scapegoating hate this board throws at him, he actually had a decent season last year and a decent pre-season. The problem is just that Benning is a greedy person and likes to have A LOT of depth. With this many grinder/vets signed (Beagle, Roussel, Schaller), young players pushing for spots, and Motte playing exceptionally well, deserving of a spot. On paper, the only players Gagner can challenge for a position are Schaller, Motte, Granlund and Leipsic.

Well... yeah, of course a GM wants a lot of depth. That makes him greedy? What?

Shaller and Grandlund did nothing in the preseason, these 2 have been invisible this season so far.

Gagner got a goal.

So I would say greed has a lil bit to do with it.

Welcome to the new NHL Sam. Just because you've played for 11 years in the league, doesn't mean you'll be gifted a spot. There are better players than you who also couldn't make it. His biggest mistake was assuming. That sounds like entitlement.  I hope he rips it up in the AHL, so then Benning can get something for him at the TDL.

Schaller outscored Gagner last year, as a 4th line grinder. He plays a heavier game and will defend his teammates. He is a much better fit for our bottom 6 than Gagner is.

Horvat scored last night. I don’t think he’d say he’s been playing his best hockey so far this season. A goal in the preseason doesn’t mean FA if you’re lackadaisical in the rest of your play.

Your point about greed makes literally no sense. This board spent the year bitching about us not having enough depth when injuries hit and now we actually have some madeup of actual NHL players and Benning’s “greedy”. Okay then pal.

If you want to talk stats... Gagner is not that far behind Schaller... regardless of line mates.

Schaller -

2017-18 Boston Bruins NHL 82 12 10 22 42 -5 11 0 2 2 2

Gagner -

2017-18 Vancouver Canucks NHL 74 10 21 31 35 -18 -- -- -- -- --

Grandlund -

2017-18 Vancouver Canucks NHL 53 8 4 12 8 -10

Whats sad is that both players played significantly less games that Schaller.

I have no bones about Horvat scoring not scoring so I dont know why you would even bring him up.

Placing Gagner on waivers is about the 3 mill in his contract. these 2 did shiz in the preseason and they are doing shiz in the regular season. Yet Gagner is the leading scorer for the Marlies. I wouldn't doubt he is hoping to be traded from this doomed team.

Isn't Schaller supposed to be a 4th line checker and PKer? Isn't Gagner supposed to be a middle six PP specialist?

I hope Gagner gets traded too. It'd be nice to get at least a late round pick for a guy who cost nothing but cap to acquire.

nucks did him a solid by sending him to the marlies

he gets more game time and ice time there

which increases the chance he might attract the interest of another nhl team

and also he is closer to his family

not sure if the marlies are even paying a dollar towards his contract

he is clearly done as a canuck since he is no longer in our system

we just continue to own his rights due to his contract with us

and he is a vet...... he even admits that

so as a vet .. why the hell would he say that nonsense

he clearly was not mentally prepared for this season

his sense of entitlement might just make him permanently unattractive

to any other nhl team

why this backhanded slap at the canucks after he ends up with the marlies

what an idiot .. a weak vet.. poor professional perspective

I actually like Schaller and Beagle, big boys who play a gritty heavy game. Canucks need guys like this. I think they are a tougher team to play against this year, and once Boeser and Horvat get going, and Roussel finally plays, we might start seeing more wins. Gagner just doesn't fit anymore. He's not big, gritty and difficult to play against, he was brought in to score goals, and hasn't been able to do much of that.

With plenty of power play time for Gagner and not a whole lot to show for it. As I said, Schaller fits the bottom 6 dynamic far far better than Gagner ever will, and he’s not good enough to crack our top 6 currently. We can’t trade him, so we waived him. Pretty simple.

I brought Horvat up because you used Gagner’s goal in preseason as a reason to keep him in the lineup, as if that makes any sense. Difference between the two is Horvat brings far more to the table than Gagner, which is why he’s still there.

The Canucks still have to pay him that money, it’s a one-way contract. The only difference is we save just over a million in cap, which at this point makes little difference as we have plenty of room anyways. The money has literally nothing to do with him being waived. He got waived because he got outplayed by other players and Green and Benning are sticking to their words that nearly everyone is on notice.

Horvat is a totally different player here. :picard:

Do you think The Canucks wanted Gagner to be sent to the Marlies or to another team?...and as per the "stats" he was one of the better players in the preseason. If Benning is sticking to his word...why is Granny and Schaller  still here....3 games in the regular season...all of preseason..and Gagner the only producer here.
