[Rumour] Red Wings shopping Jimmy Howard for 1st-round pick

For the moment, the price for Jimmy Howard appears to be high.

The Detroit Red Wings have made it clear they want at least a first-round draft selection in exchange for the veteran goaltender, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman wrote Wednesday.

Howard is a pending unrestricted free agent who boasts a .923 save percentage in 22 games this season. The 34-year-old's contract carries a cap hit of $5.29 million.

In late November, TSN's Darren Dreger reported that the St. Louis Blues were keeping tabs on Howard, but that the netminder would come at a considerable cost.

Howard's in his 13th NHL season - all spent with the Red Wings.

Who's the last goaltender to have been traded for a 1st Round pick?  Cory Schneider?

Fredrick Andersen was traded for a late 1st (30th pick in 2016) and a 2nd in 2017 in 2016.

Jimmy Howard is not worth a 1st. Maybe a mid 2nd at best, but not a 1st. Doubt a team bites unless that team has multiple 1sts.

TO might bite.  He's a UFA at the end of the year so it won't affect their cap next year.  And they still have some room this year.  He's probably an upgrade over Andersen...

The Leafs have one if not the most advanced stat department in the league.  They analysed in detail the system Babcock wanted to implement and the type of saves their goalies would most likely have to make.  They specifically targeted Andersen.

Andersen has one of the best records in the league.

I hate TO but I have to admit they have a great goalie in Andersson. Howard would make for great depth but he isnt worth a first.
