I just noticed

Holtby will be paid $5.7M for next season!

$5.7M for a backup Goalie! :picard: :picard:  (when 1 facepalm isn't enough)

You also realize that that was done intentionally to make him less attractive in the ED, correct?

Also doesn't hurt Benning's owner by keeping the actual cash low, in the midst of a pandemic...

But dim Jim.. am I right?

did you also notice that he is paid $2.9M this year?

Then how when you add this years salary and next years salary, then divide by two, you get the cap hit of $4.3 per year for 2 years?

8.6 divided by 2 = 4.3

Jim signed a hell of a goalie, no doubt about it. Is Holtby overpaid? No, not in Jim's world. Many fans thought that Clarke can fix Holtby's game once the canucks announced this signing. Obviously he couldn't.

Great signing, like lots of others.

Bit early to say he couldn't fix Holtby.

Minimal practice time, condensed schedule.

Clarke didn't fix Markstrom in 26  team games, why expect insta cure with Holtby?

Because in Canuck-land, 7 years is a long rebuild, 11 games with almost no practice time is a large sample size and enough time to completely revamp a vet goalies game etc, etc...

He can be bought out this summer with a cap hit of only $500,000 for 2021. And Benning can go find a backup for $800k to sign for the expansion draft.  But thanks for your extensive research...

I don't understand how the buyout is so low but that does make me feel better about the contract.

Holtby was never going to be a good goalie for us, it was a recipe for disaster. 2-3 seasons off some decent hockey, he was sheltered in Washington and even then was pretty average the last 2 years. Now he's older, coming into a team which leaks A-grade chances, it was never going to be pretty.

JB probably knew this too, we could have signed a better goaltender, sure. He's gotten Holtby in for 2 reasons:

1) Expansion draft eligible (and hopefully picked as a 3rd goalie is a juicy MAF-like target).

2) Cup winner, playoff warrior, he can mentor Demko better than anyone about how to play long regular seasons and perform in the playoffs

We can see on-ice how bad he is and how bad is value is, but we won't know of how important he'll have been to Demko's development until the next deep Demko playoff run. Demko had Marky to mentor him up until now and is not ready to be mentor-free just yet, but he's looking like he's turning that corner this season. Even if we have Holtby next season, he'll provide a useful mentor to sit on the bench and help Demko out in tough situations. Is that worth the money he's getting paid? Absolutely. Is it worth his cap hit? That's a tricky one but I think yes - he's an investment for Demko's on-ice performance.

I'm not sure if this'll continue, but this Holtby was one we've rarely seen this year (maybe once or twice so far). What a great game from him to inspire our boys.

He gave us a great game when we needed it most. It will likely be our fondest memory of him in a Canuck uniform.

Kudos to Hotlby for pulling out a HoltBeast performance for us. It has been a rollercoaster ride with him in our crease (and I am a big Holtby fan since his Hershey Bears days) but he stood tall last night.

This game evoke shades of the Ryan Miller vs the World (Toronto) game back in 2016 when he defended Richmond's own "Tony Stretcher!", taking matters into his own hands.
