They have so many of these reclamation projects for dirt cheap. At least one of them will be a hit. Low risk versus high reward. Simmonds - 1.5M Thornton - 700K Spezza - 700K Bogosian - 1M Add Brodie, a good defenceman. I like the moves. Their defense is marginally improved. This is not a position which needed to be addressed in Toronto...but obviously Dubas knows how to allocate cap space.

oldnews
Thornton, for the first time in his NHL career - at age 40 - was under 50% in the faceoff circle last year. What better time for the Leafs to swoop in and sign him..... Also didn't kill a second of penalties last year.... Maybe, make a bottom six center out of him yet.... Anyhow - uh - not a surprising signing - was expecting it. Might get some assists there - can still pass the puck - but that bottom six....? Are they ever going to shut anyone down?

Despite what leafs media will tell us, signing a bunch of good old Ontario boys is not the way to build a team. I’m willing to bet that at least one of these bargain signings will be a hit, leaning towards Jumbo Joe as the most probable.

Barrie was crap for them. Brodie is a big upgrade.
Lancaster
Honestly, I wouldn't have minded if Jumbo Joe signed with Vancouver. As a depth piece and #2 PPQB, would have been good bang for the buck. 3
DeNiro
A guy who was charged with assaulting a police officer early in his career. What better mentor for Matthews.

It looked to me like Joe was going thru the motions in some of the games I watched last year. Thorton and Spezza? Spezza looked like he was outplaying some of the younger guys last year. Maybe this works in a short season.

Jumbo Slow. Good luck in TOR. Character guy - one of the best passers in the games history imo.

Hard to argue with his stats but I’d never describe him as a character guy. Should have never been captain in San Jose.
