I get the feeling that Pettersson's contract is virtually done and has been for a while now (why else would he stop in Vancouver and not go straight to Michigan to join Hughes?) but they are still negotiating Hughes'. The agency (Barry and Brisson) probably refuses to finalize Petey's deal until Quinn's can be announced at the same time.

Obviously speculation on my end, but just the feeling I get.

It's possible that they are waiting for season to start for Ferland's LTIR to be activated for the maximum contract they could get for the max contract between themselves..  It's probable cause for those holdout.  When Benning said that they are close, meaning, they have agreed to sign them when season starts for maximum and they might have reached agreement and they are waiting until legality of the roster moves since they might not want to lose a few players to waivers due to cap constraint. .

Can go 10% over the cap in the off season, so that’s not it.

There's less cap available if they sign once the season starts.  They won't be able to maximise Ferland's LTIR relief because they've kept so much cap space.

Yep while they're playing shinny and watching football games the rest of the boys are putting in work. Hard seeing that when you see the max effort some prospects and players in camp are making just to be on the team. And it's all over a few extra pennies. It's sad really but I guess the agent and gm just trying to do there job. Getting max dollar should be for free agents not restricted contracts.

3.5 million dollars in LTIR since Ferland is finished.    Those money can be split between Petterson and Hughes.

Which would likely be lost if they sign once the season starts unless a major move like adding an LTIR contract.  Can't get relief if there's no justification to exceed the cap.  With all the space they've kept they can easily fit Ferland under the cap if they aren't signed.  Can't use the over approach once the season starts - ie they would need to find a way to fit everyone including Ferland under 81.5M and then apply LTIR.  Much harder to do given roster limits and waiver risk than go above the cap and then apply LTIR to get back under which can only be done before the start of the season.

40/43 posing for photos is a big middle finger to a fan base waiting on them to collect whatever it is they’re demanding.

I think the heat around this is heightened because of the current cultural moment. That was captured in the Ottawa Sun re: Brady Tkachuk:

“What Tkachuk fails to see is the public’s very thin patience after dealing with COVID deaths, job losses, business closures, home foreclosures, an unnecessary election, masked versus unmasked, vaxxed versus unvaxxed, etc. In light of this, for any 22-year-old to think he deserves more than $8 million a year is beyond the pale and shows Ottawa that he thinks he is bigger than the Sens...”

Yep.   He's not even worth that.   So a slap to the face of all the Sens fans who've been patiently waiting since they lost their best chance of a cup over a two year complete tire fire.   At least they can cheer Stone, Zibanejad , EK, Pageau et al on from a distance.   Just think about that for a second.   They lost the best offensive d since Coffey,  the last one to be top ten in scoring 3 or more times, arguably the leagues best defensive forward behind Bergeron who's getting really long in the tooth, and will end up with a very respectable career - and Zinbnejad, one of the leagues most underrated and under appreaciated break out stars since they been tanking.   Add Chabot, Batherson, and a few others that they would have added to the fold anyways and - well they should all be eating their cake right now and enjoying it.

And then there is us.  Who've waited through the last Sedin contract - and come on nobody expected much of anything - Edler and Tanev, the rest of the old guard to move on ... and finally get a couple of players who seem to be great - and instead of training camp and bad skates - fitness testing, this is what we've got.   QHs also wouldn't do the physical at the draft.   A pattern seems to be emerging lol...well it's ok as a fan to express some dissapointment.   Didn't Linden come to camp anyways without a contract?  I'm pretty sure guys used to do that anyways.  At least some did.

So should they just take a smaller salary because the world isn’t what it was 18 months ago? I’m not sure that’s really a fair expectation….

What someone should sign for is always subjective and relative to their team's dynamics and not just who they consider their peers around the league.  Players had to adjust their expectations for years after the salary cap was instituted.  On top of that fans and teammate's opinions do have an influence.

This sends a great message to their team and coach….:picard:

My main issue with this picture is that they are not wearing masks next to the thousands of fans in the stands. All we need now is for them to pick up COVID just before signing their contracts...
