Gonchar teaching defence via video? How does he teach a 5'11" guy to play like a 6'3" guy? One is much bigger, heavier and likely stronger with a much longer reach.

 

Club Chaos, Allvin runs the show and he has since being hired, Rutherford confirmed that and so did Allvin.

 

They are still saying we want a banner not which one or when or how or with who on the team.

I was ok with the presser. Was pretty adversarial at the beginning. Media stepped up and pressed them with the right questions. 

 

I liked that Rutherford apologized and addressed it. I mean, it was something rather than nothing. Didn't quite agree with him blaming it all on the media but get where he was coming from. At least it seems like he's seeing the missteps he's made in this market.

 

Also liked that Allvin kept coming back to the fact he hasn't seen a banner hanging from the rafters as his motivation/decision-making. He seemed to really be motivated by that. The many references to the long term also sounds like they may be looking to next season after the draft to really dig in ... hopefully that's the case 

 

I'm open to Tocchet. Loved him as a player and hope he brings that to the team. Also liked his answers about the PK and utilizing guys in special teams. Also what he said about channelling emotion the right way responsibly.

I'm curious about Gonchar and Foote ...

 

There's a possible upside in all of this. Time for talk is over.

My reaction.

 

1. Tochett was better than I expected. That is pretty low bar as I was not expecting much. I liked it when Allvin said that Tochett "is not the smartest guy in the room", which is obviously true. But most of what Tochett said was pretty reasonable.  I am not saying I like Tochett, but he probably did about as well as he could in the conference.

 

2. My opinion of Allvin keeps falling.  He is very reluctant to give a straight answer. He can use a lot of words to say nothing.  And when does say something meaningful it does not make a lot of sense.

 

3. JR was pretty much as expected. I don't like the way he handled the Bruce situation and I think has made some key errors (especially re-signing Miller instead of trading him at the deadline). But I think he does try to be honest and I can see that the owner put him in  a tough spot. Every president wants to choose his own key people, especially the coach. I love Bruce but JR and Bruce are not on the same page in terms of overall approach.

 

4. I was not impressed by the JR "apology". It was classic "I am sorry if you were offended" and "yeah, my flaw is I am too honest". (A slight variation on the classic "my flaw is that I work too hard".).

 

5. There was a lot of talk about "process". But there was no almost no talk about the talent level of the team. This team needs more talent and I would have liked a question to JR about the team was going to get more talent on the team.

I actually liked a lot of what I heard in the presser - but as usual words don’t mean much to me.  Hopefully Tocchet can start rebuilding this group and Allvin/JR focus up on the deadline.
