Warhippy
https://russianmachineneverbreaks.com/2023/06/10/capitals-have-reportedly-openly-engaged-teams-about-evgeny-kuznetsov-and-anthony-manthas-availability/ This offseason has long been rumored to be one of transition for the Washington Capitals and it appears like general manager Brian MacLellan is getting a head start on the trade market. According to The Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli, the Caps have tested waters around the league regarding both Evgeny Kuznetsov and Anthony Mantha. Both forwards take up a significant amount of the team’s salary cap and moving them could open up more potential avenues for MacLellan to explore. “The Capitals have openly engaged teams about the availability of both Kuznetsov and Mantha, looking to shake things up and create some salary cap flexibility in the process,” Seravalli writes. Kuznetsov has two years left on his contract that sees him paid $7.8 million per season. Mantha has one final season remaining on his current contract that will pay him $5.7 million. Seravalli adds that Kuznetsov may be seen as a player “slowing down” based on his 2022-23 points output (55 in 81 games), and due to that his contract may be hard to move. It’s a similar story with Mantha as Seravalli imagines that any eventual trade would likely have to include a sweetener from the Caps if they want the other side to take on Mantha’s full salary. The hockey insider explored the chances the Caps would just end up buying out Mantha in an earlier article.

Popular Post MeanSeanBean
The hardest of passes. I've heard the Mantha for Boeser discussion, but that just seems like a huge drop in quality for minor cap relief. As for Kuz.... I don't even want us SNIFFING around him. 1 8 1
JeremyCuddles
If nobody wants Garland I can't see why anyone would want Mantha. Dude is 4 seasons removed from the last time he had 20 goals, he never had a 50 point season. He is straight trash. Even with an expiring contract there's no value in giving up assets for him.
DownUndaCanuck
Let the games begin. Two players we should stay well away from. The only guys on that roster I'd like are Feheravy or Alexeyev or Iorio but neither are coming cheap. Boeser + Rathbone for Mantha and Alexeyev That'd be interesting... grandmaster
Too rich for our blood. Only way I do this is if they take on OEL and we know that’s not happening
PhillipBlunt
The Canucks already have the superior Kuz, who also doesn't face(expletive deleted) a two-pound mound every Saturday. Edited June 13, 2023 by PhillipBlunt
HKSR
The key here is they are trying to clear cap. Boeser/Garland/Beauvillier/Myers/etc are not what they want. So unless we're willing to take on either Mantha or Kuznetsov for picks and prospects, there's nothing to see here.
EddieVedder
Mantha ill take. Kuznetsov is just a dope so no thanks
SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME
Like others have said, the Canucks are not anywhere close to being in the cap position where they could consider trades for either of these players. (Which is a good thing.) The handful of teams sitting on $30M+ in cap space can definitely afford to make deals to take on salaries for Kuznetsov and Mantha, receiving some very tasty sweeteners in the process. Would not be surprised to see a team like Chicago get involved. They could demand a nice haul of sweeteners, adding even more draft picks to their already impressive war chest, while acquiring some short term, veteran forward talent to flesh out the lineup around Bedard.

D-Money
They'd probably buy out Kuznetsov, but he has a $2M signing bonus each of the next 2 years, so the savings are reduced. They'd save $4M each of the next 2 years, but then have the $2M hit in the 3rd & 4th years. Mantha has no signing bonus. And the way his contact is structured gives extra savings. Just a $1.37M cap hit this year, and $2.17M hit the next. If no one is willing to take him at 50% retained, they'll probably just buy him out. Wildcard prediction: they buy them both out. Bure_Pavel
I would still do Boeser for Mantha, tiny bit of cap relief plus adds some much needed size to our top 6.

Waiting until you hit absolute 'rock bottom' is hard on an organization/fan-base. Why wait for that when you can start 'rebuilding' sooner? They didn't get the lottery so no point going through a slow descent in the standings for 3 more years.....

VegasCanuck
I would do: To Vancouver: Mantha 2023 2nd round pick To Washington Garland 6th round pick No retention on either side Then, buyout Mantha We gain 3.6 million cap flexibility this summer and about 2.8 carried into next summer (factoring removal of the 4.95 to Garland for 3 more years) and completely free of that 4.95 for the 3rd year. We also pickup a 2nd round pick in a deep draft. Washington gets a feisty winger who can play in a lot of situations and bring new energy to their lineup. 1
