[Signing] Capitals re-sign Tom Wilson

Recommended Posts

We have actually some inflation, that is very different to pre Covid times. Look at this contract, in his seventh year it is easy 20% less real money than it looks now, only because of inflation. And of course, sooner or later, the cap will go up, too.

Its funny, many think these type of players are unimportant, yet , it appears many NHL teams think otherwise. Does anyone think we over paid for Miller still? ::D

Too bad Virtanen didn't work out but we seem to be acquiring players who are not going to skate away when their team mates are taking physical abuse.

Doesn’t Toronto have Reaves now?

Reaves is no softy. Plus, he plays fourth line minutes, if at all. What makes Wilson so great is he plays top line minutes. He plays against other clubs best players. Jack Hughes and the the Smurfs on Jersey are his opponents and not Reaves.

Hey, even in a post-Ovie rebuild (it will be a painful one), someone's gotta captain the ship, right?  He's the obvious candidate to wear the 'C' in a couple years.

This is a good point.

The Caps only got what 2-3 more years to try and win another cup before Ovi is finally done and they start the rebuild. So yeah Wilson likely won't be worth 6.5 million when he hits his mid 30s, but I could totally see him getting the C next and holding that role for 4-5 years as they rebuild.

Not the worst choice as a captain. He will thrive as a protector for the younger guys that will be coming up. In terms of production when he falls off it'll be at a time where they don't actually need to win.

These types of signings are  evidence that some GMs don't care what is going to happen in the last years, as they don't expect to still be in that particular gm chair.

No. These signings show that real hockey players, who play old time hockey in a big minute role have a lot of value. Lots of baby whiner cowards get way too much love now.

Old, is a good word to describe what he will be during the last years of that deal.

Nobody in Washington (not the team, the GM, the fans) will care what happens to Washington after Ovechkin is gone.  Chicago had nothing but overpaid stars this year and look who they got.

There are only three long-term contracts left.  Kuemper for 4 years, Strome for 5, and now Wilson for 8.  That's it.

That old-school brand of hockey is going to get you in a lot of penalty trouble, suspension trouble, and injury trouble.  Doesn't make a difference when your team is rebuilding, though.

Future looking very bleak for Washington.

At least, they got their Cup, though.

They got a Cup and They're gunna have an 900 goal scorer exclusive to their Franchise. That's good publicity,  doing a long rebuild after is worth it for them

contracts not really going to hurt the washington in the long term.. why? coz they'll probably be tearing it down after ovie breaks the goal record.. they'll be in full rebuild mode having 1 or 2 bad contract ain't gonna hurt them. most of their big contracts falls off in 3 years and they'll be swimming in cap space to eat contracts to rebuild

Tough player to play against but this contract is going to end poorly for the caps

JT Miller is superior in all the important areas of the game. I like Wilson and his heavy hits and ability to drop the mitts but this contract is the epitome of over payment.

Yeah this one is not gonna age well at all.  The type of game he plays means he'll likely be done in a few years...

Kinda weird too in the fact that you'd think the Caps are moving towards a rebuild soon given the ages of their stars.

Agree, but at the same time, I wouldn't be surprise if he ends up "retiring" due to medical reason and be the next Pronger/Seabrook/Hossa.
