  14. I still think Juolevi will pan out to be a quality player. It's funny how people understand the old saying that D take longer to develop, yet are simultaneously extremely impatient with him at barely 22 years old.

It's tough when you're supposed to be a stud and the best of the class on D, when others like Sergachev/ McAvoy/ Chychrun are already killing it and people see the guy drafted after, Tkachuk, as a guy who can fill a perceived need

    4. Coconuts

      Coconuts

It's definitely tough when guys drafted around you guy go on to have great success, but as a Canuck fan that's honestly nothing new. I really think Olli's got a good chance of making the bigs next season. It's one thing to hear about a guy and see tape, it's another to get a second camp with a guy in a single season. Green, the other coaching staff, and management are currently seeing lots of him. If he busts his ass and does what's asked of him in the offseason I see him making it, if only for cap reasons.

I expect two spots will open up, Fanta's and Stecher's. Love Stech but I think he'll be a cap casualty as management tries to fit Marky, Tanev, and Toffoli. I'm expecting Rathbone will spend at least a season in Utica or overseas (if the AHL doesn't start back up in some capacity), but I imagine he'll get a long look. I'll be surprised if any additions to our D come from outside the organization. Rafferty, Juolevi, Brisebois and Rathbone will all be pushing hard.

I'm in Jake's corner too. He took steps forward this season, there are still inconsistencies in his game and he's still got growing up to do, but I don't expect people to have everything pulled together at almost 24 millionaires or not. I certainly didn't, I still don't. If his progression stalls and we have to make a tough decision down that road we'll cross that bridge when we get there.

I'm with you, it's still challenging for me to watch some of Linkin Park's old live shows. The guy's pain made his music so beautiful and impactful, and it's such a shame it got to be too much for him bear. Incredible musician though.

It's bittersweet, I've been watching a lot of their old live stuff the last month and a bit and it's definitely different. Even some of their music hits differently now.

Part of getting older is that your heroes get old and die too, we often forget that because we often associate music and musicians with periods of our lives, but when you lose them to suicide it's harder.

  19. How did you become a Canucks fan?

I became a fan back in the 03-04 era, I would have been 12-14ish. I became a fan because someone I idolized was a huge fan, and because of the EA NHL games. My parents aren't into hockey so I needed someone else to give me the push. I consider myself fortunate to have followed most of the Sedin's careers.

      Born into it.

Mom, mostly...she was a HUGE fan.  Loved all sports but Canucks were her team.

Down the road, Trevor and Sopel would be her favourites.

I had to be Mom-Dad for my son when he was young, so Canucks became our thing (too).  We did it all - carnivals, family fairs, ASG festivities.  Was a great time for us...memories stored forever.

LOL...my ex used to say "you better not ever cheat on me (I wouldn't....loyalty is my strong point)"...he'd continue with "and, if you do, it'd better be with Trevor Linden".   This was prompted by him being convinced that Trevor was "checking me out" years ago at an event we were at.  He insisted (and took a pic, lol).  He apparently had dreams after that that Trev and I ran off together!  :towel:

    1. luckylager

      luckylager

      You're damn right.

They've spent their entire lives playing to win. There's no way they sully their reputations (and the sport) by throwing games for a potential pick. Not a chance.

    2. Coconuts

I don't get it tbh. I understand fans wanting this or that regarding tanking or hoping for higher picks, I've been there in the past, but to actually believe the guys would sacrifice their playoff dreams? The clock is always ticking when it comes to an athlete's career, many NHL players don't become much more than journeymen, they never know which playoff opportunity could be their last. Injuries happen, lockouts, pandemics, illness, accidents.

And honestly, we're Canucks fans, our luck with the lottery has always been &^@#ed. Why would that be different now.

  22. Sedins should be first ballot hall of famers in 2021. Yes, ahead of Alfredsson thanks to their hardware. Mogilny should go in alongside them. They did pretty much everything but win a cup, and they should have had that too.

Being twins does make em a novelty, but they've got the individual hardware on top of team accomplishments like the world championship, Olympic medals, ect. I'd argue that they had the greatest chemistry of any two NHL players ever. Fans liked to hurl slurs at em, but they were and still are pretty damn respected around the league. I'd have them ahead of Hossa honestly.

Henrik won an Art Ross, Hart, two King Clancy's, an Olympic gold, a world championship and two bronze WC medals, a Euro junior championship, and silver at the world u17 hockey challenge. He was also an all-star several times and made amazing contributions to his community. He also won a few Swedish awards including the golden puck, which he shared with Daniel.

As for Daniel, he obviously won the Art Ross and Ted Lindsay trophies, along with a King Clancy later. He arguably could have won the Hart too, I'm biased but I had him over Perry. Daniel had a pretty identical international resume, but he also won an Olympic silver in 2014. Fittingly enough, their accomplishments are pretty damn similar. His community contributions are also well documented.

Hossa was a solid two way player who was dangerous offensively as the numbers show, you don't score 500+ goals without skill, but he never won any big individual awards. He also won &^@# all internationally. He did win three cups, and that helps him for sure, but it's the hockey hall of fame not the NHL hall of fame. If Hossa made it first ballot the twins should be shoe ins imo.

    3. Ghostsof1915

      Ghostsof1915

HHOF looks at Stanley Cups. Winning Gold Medals helps. But even mediocre players on Cup winning teams get in (Especially if it's an Ex-Leaf). Should they get in yes. Will they....remains to be seen.

    4. Coconuts

      Coconuts

I'm pretty sure every player who's won the Art Ross trophy (not who's lead the league in scoring prior to it's existence) is in the HOF, and almost all of those who have won but aren't eligible yet likely will be (Kane, Ovi, Sid, Malkin, McDavid, Jagr, Thornton, ect). If anyone's gonna break that streak it'll be Jamie Benn and that could change depending on how the latter part of his career goes.

  24. I wonder how Covid will impact CBA negotiations, or whether it will at all

The current state of things is something neither side saw coming

    1. coastal.view

      coastal.view

      what aspect concerns you ?

they can teleconference/cam negotiations if in person meetings are not possible

clearly covid creates a huge uncertainty on revenue streams due to the impact that it shut down major portions of the economy in the usa and canada, fans cannot attend games for the time being, there could be a second wave which add another layer of revenue loss and extend fan non attendance, there is general uncertainty about covid, we are not yet clear about all its potential health impacts

the bottom line is that revenues will be impacted into the future and the cba sets out terms of agreement between players and the league largely based on revenue sharing

the spin off issues impact salary cap, current contract values, operating costs (increased due to enhanced health concern expenses to protect players and other staff), potential for expanded roster sizes,  television rights contract negotiations, etc.

so yeah, covid is a game changer for how the nhl will operate in the next 2 to 4 years

it was barely 3 months ago that the nhl made announcements regarding salary cap issues, and that it was likely the cap was going to increase significantly
