@Alflives A fun fact about compensatory picks:

Our very own Filip Hronek was actually selected with a compensatory pick traded from Arizona as part of the Datsyuk cap dump deal.

Arizona got that pick from not signing Connor Bleackley who they acquired from Colorado in the Boedker trade.;)

This is awesome!

I’ve got a feeling he’s going to become a very good player for us - maybe I just think he’s going to get extra rope cause Allvin, and I love that he’s been playing top line minutes in SHL

Excited to have Johasson 23, 6'1 -RD -in Abby so fast.. Will be great to see him play in AHL playoffs.. Bet he stays in Vancouver and trains and get use to things before training camp. Big for Johansson has big summer preparing to try and make Vancouver out of training camp...

Woo 22 -6'0 - RD - Having a very good bounce back season, great to see..

Look at prospects AHL -

RD Johansson 23 -RD. - Juulson 25 RD - Woo 23  RD  -McWard 21 RD--

 LD - Wolanin -- Brisebois LD -- Hirose 23 LD - Rathbone 23 LD

OEL-Johansson would be terrifying defensively  I think

and I meant at the AHL level

Hirose is not ready for shutdown minutes with Hronek across an 82 game pro season imo

unless he has a monstrous offseason but even then I think he needs two off seasons and a year of AHL hockey before making our top 6 but who knows! He could surprise and he has looked very good.

Hirose's calmness under pressure is not something they can teach in the AHL, nor can they improve it. That same demeanor brought Tanev to the Canucks as a full time defensive specialist. Yes, his physical strength can be improved, but that can change a lot over a summer. His skating and thinking skills are already NHL ready.

I disagree.

The main job of his partner is to be able to move the puck and not be a liability.

The more Hughes has to go back and retrieve the puck the more he has forecheckers barreling in on him. The best way for him to be “safe” is to spend less time in his own zone.

One of Hughes primary functions is evading the forecheck and transitioning to the attack. He is valuable to us, not just because he negotiates centre ice and the opposing end well, his greatest value is getting the damn puck out of our end. The best way to protect him when retrieving pucks is two-fold - forwards need to do a better job of screening forecheckers, and those who escape that kind of resistance to invoke mayhem on Hughes need to face the wrath of someone who can put the fear of God in them. Hughes is the guy who is going to transition the puck, not his partner. If that was his partner's skill, he too would be an 8 million dollar man, then what would be the purpose of Hughes?

A third way is to have Demko improve his puck skills so that he becomes like a third defenceman, sort of like how Ron Hextall made life easy for Mark Howe on those Philedelphia teams back in the days.

Very decent showing in the SHL last year, it'll be interesting to see where he plays in the Abby lineup. He might surprise everyone and slot right into their top-4 and if he does (and has a good playoffs), maybe he contends a few of the bottom pairing guys next year for the Canucks? We already have such a log-jam of AHL defenders/bottom pairing NHL guys, but Johansson is 23-24 years old and has all the right tools.

I won't get my hopes up, not saying Johansson is going to be Hughes' next perfect partner, but I could see him being a solid consistent top-4 Abby guy next year.

I’d be disappointed if he’s not part of our top 8 NHL defence next year.  From a quality of play perspective SHL is probably a tougher league than the AHL.  Challenge for any player is making the jump to the best league and being able to get their game off but this player likely doesn’t have much to prove in the AHL.

I agree, I think he has a legitimate shot to play in the NHL next season...if there's no drastic changes (trades or UFA signings). I could see him potentially in the 3rd pairing or 7th defenceman. Playing limited minutes in those situations would allow us to ease him into the lineup and put him in a situation to succeed.  I think he has the skill, size and hockey IQ to make NHL... a good partner might be OEL (if he's still here).

The only question mark with him (IMO) is his ability to adjust (quickly) to the smaller ice surface. Time and space on the smaller Ice surface are sometimes an issue with Euro players, sometimes they need a little time to adjust. He didn't play junior hockey in North America and think his only expierence on smaller ice would have been internationally or the World Juniors.

That rule has existed for a long time.

If you can’t or choose not to sign your first round pick you get a 2nd.

2 2nd round picks for Virtanen and Juolevi, would have looked good. damn i wish we had a crystal ball

None of these guys are going to win the Norris, but if they can play a few good games at a time on our bottom pair and rotate through, our depth is starting to look pretty good.  The biggest value that they can provide other than being servicable, is that they are all on cheap deals, that is huge for our cap crunch.

I could see Hirose-Johansson being a decent third pair down the road.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well he's had 10 days to practice with the club and he might be coming into the lineup to replace Juulsen. Otherwise Keeper is coming in.

Come to think of it, we may need Brady Keeper to come in and dust a couple of Wranglers.
