Cap wouldn't have been as much of an issue if we didn't sign weber

We have too many Defenceman that have to stay on the roster

Edler tanev

Hamhuis sbisa

Clendenning bartkowski

Corrado weber

So we permamanetly have two Defenceman in the press box

Not when our guys drop like flies.

IMO I highly doubt there is anything to worry about. Last I heard Sven was working out hard in Vancouver for next season. Both sides are just trying to come to a deal that works for them both and they have 3 months to do it. I haven't heard one rumor that Sven is unhappy here. Better for both sides to take there time get a deal that works for both parties. As much as we want the Canucks to get the best deal, anyone that has worked for a company and has felt undervalued losses there motivation. I think its in the best interest for the Canucks to give contracts that keep the players happy but aren't so good that they lose there hunger to try to get a better contract next time. Its a fine balance and they still have lots of time to find it.

That's the point. Benning wants to carry 8 D-men on the roster due to the wear and tear of travel and playing in the rougher Western Conference.

When Edler got injured this year, Hamhuis had as many games under his belt as the other 5 D men in the starting lineup combined.

Hammer

Sbisa

Weber

Stanton

Biega

Clendening

They need 10 guys that can take a shift at the NHL level and they have for a loooooong time.

Flames' D last year weren't big and they did alright. If they can clear the puck out of the zone more quickly than they did last year it will certainly help.

That's what some people don't understand. We can load up as many big bruisers on the back end as we want, but if our D can't skate the puck out of our zone or make an efficient outlet pass, it's useless.

Like others have said, if you can transition the puck out of the zone quickly there is little need for big, bad bruisers on the back end.

The way the game seems to be trending there is going to be a lot more of the "undersize" guy who can transition the puck quickly out of the zone and a lot less of the 6'5 230 DD whos main job is to throw his body around and "clear the crease"

Just some teams who have defenceman who make quick transitions out of the zone

Ana

Chicago

Dallas

Calgary

Montreal

Mainly big body stay at home guys

Tampa

Oilers (yes their d core sucks but thats what it built around last season

Islanders

Florida?

San Jose

LA

The "new era" can also be called PMD defenceman

I understand it just fine. We don't have Calgary's defence of even last year. Who are you guys trying to kid?

And you know what works best? Guys with SIZE and/or skill who can transition the puck. That's what.

We're severely lacking in all fronts.

I think that over the next 2 season this is going to change. IMO the game will be more "skill" based, which has already started with the elimination of "goons". The Big body dman who can't skate is quickly going to be replaced with smooth skating, "undersized" PMDs who jump up into the play as a 4th forward.

As for "Transition players" it's really an umbrella term that can be thrown at any defenceman, I prefer to call them PMD as anyone in the in NHL can transition the puck with some regularity.

On the PMD front we have (PMD IMO is the ability for a defenceman to jump up into the rush when it's smart too)

HUtton

Subban

Clendening

Corrado

Edler

Bartowski

Stay at home

Cederholm

Sbisa

Pedan

Hybrid

Tanev

Hamhuis

In two years Cederholm and Pedan should be on the team -- both guys who are big, tough as nails, and can skate decently (especially Pedan). Hutton is also good-sized, can skate and move the puck, and McEneny is even bigger with a similar skillset. Then we still have the smaller guys in Subban and Sautner who are mobile puck-movers.

Remember -- what we have now are stop-gaps. That's why they're all coming in on short-term deals. We have some decent prospects on the way and all it takes is one trade for a good young prospect and it can turn right around.

Nobody said the Canucks had their D. Where'd you get that from?

And Calgary is not the only ones following that model. Chicago is built around puck movers as well.

It's easier said than done to get guys with size and skill, those guys have to be acquired through good drafting. In the meantime the Canucks should be focused on getting good puck movers into the lineup, to help our young forwards develop a transition game.

But that's just it, have we brought in enough skill to compensate for any size we've lost or are we just smaller?

But anyway, isn't this a Baertschi thread?

That's great and all and I fully agree that's where the game is headed but we're talking about our D this coming season.

None of Tanev, Weber, Corrado or Clendening are anything close the the talent/skill levels of Chicago or Calgary's D's. We haven't got the horses for that kind of race.

Nor do they have the size to compensate for that lack of skill. They're going to be focused on by the opposition for those obvious reasons.

I'm optimistic that both Hutton and Subban will start to fill some of those needs in a couple seasons but they're still both far from sure things to be even be top 4 guys, let alone top pairing.

But yeah this is a Baer thread...

Hang on. One of my wishes over the summer was to pick up a big physical D because Calgary exposed them for their lack of size and grit on the back end in the play offs. Am I dreaming?

This is why Benning has said that he wanted to add puck movers. Not because he doesn't believe in having some beef to clear traffic in front of the net but because puck movers are the next best thing and they're attainable.

We need both a big physical crease clearing defenseman and a fast puck moving defenseman with some offensive upside.

We just need a puck moving defenseman more so.

The holes in our defense are glaring.
