Fify.  You seem to have left parts of the quote out.

I know he's a smart player, but does he use his body effectively? He's a big boy, does he play big?

Show me one pre draft list that eve had McAvoy in the conversation for top d man in that draft.  Chychrun was the early favourite, then OJ took over with Serge surging into the conversation when Chychrun fell. 

 

McAvoy was a runner up at best.  Looks like Sweeny did well but no one saw McAvoy as the best guy other than maybe McAvoy.

After the fact yes, but at the time OJ was the higher ranked D-man. Hindsight is always 20/20.

From all those projections placed in the month of June (10 reports).  Joulevi was only ranked the first D in 4 reports. Sergachev was also ranked first in 4 D in 4 reports.  So he wasn’t ranked ahead of all three. 
 

it really was a toss up between the two. Oilers had stated post draft that had pool party not dropped they were taking Sergachev at #4.  Which meant canucks would have landed Dubois.

Haha they probably would have brought him on as a 18 old and ruined his confidence. perhaps the also don’t move hall for a D either though. 

 

I also wonder if canucks would have taken petey had we drafted our center need in Dubois.

I've watched all the games on the AHL TV package, and my read is that OJ has improved every game.  Seemed a bit tentative 5 on 5 the first couple of games, but did show well on the PP

Last 3 or 4 games has shown a complete well rounded game - but has really shone defensively, angling players off, but also blocking shots like a vintage Edler.

Can't say any thundering hits have caught the eye, but he has absorbed several.

His biggest strength is prolly his passing - especially the stretch passes that result in a breakaway. Seems to gell really well with certain players - noticeably Bailey, where he passes to about 3 or 4 feet ahead of where normal players would be, but Bailey, with his speed, just changes gear to collect the puck and blows by defenders.

Have seen a couple of nice leads for Goldy as well, notably on the 1st PP unit (Baertschi is on the 2nd unit, so chemistry not so apparent).

So he is developing well, but right now, although 1st pairing and 1st PP, I'd say that Teves and Rafferty edge him out for call ups, and they both seem to be behind Sautner.   But nothing at all to panic about.

He's had so many injury problems that I really just think we need to be patient with him. He clearly has the talent. He just needs time off the IR.

Exactly. He's where we expected him to be this time last year.  But looking forward 2 or 3 years, when he and Hughes are in their early to mid 20's, the powerplay is going to be almost unstoppable - especially if paired together (although I expect to see QH quarterbacking the #1 unit and OJ the 2nd)

Good times ahead for us longsuffering fans.

And Juolevi is coming back from a major surgery to boot. He was 0.72 ppg as a rookie before the knee injury.

I see he picked up another point last night and was +2.

 

If this kid can eventually step into a top 4 as a solid D with slick transition skills, and any combo of Woo, Podz, Lind, Madden hit how good do we look for the next 5 - 7 years....

I think the timing is just about right, he will replace Edler and be our next "steady" dman for years to come. The fact he may get some call ups before Edler retires and gets to rub shoulders with him is a big deal too.

I still find it funny how under valued he is around here, and this is coming from someone who at draft day wanted MT

OJ's injury has only delayed his NHL debute.  The guy has an incredible IQ and skills.  He is never going to lay a big hit but will be a very good NHL d man.
