[Rumour] Canucks interested in Patrik Nemeth

I really won't be surprised at all if the Canucks make more moves on the back end. Benning did say he wanted to re work the defense. I won't be surprised if Tanev, Hutton, Biega and of course Pouliot are not with the team come training camp....

Agreed, I see at least three of those gone and preferably all four.  We could keep Biega and toss him down to Utica but he should NOT be on this roster.

Thing is, if we run yet again with both Edler and Tanev, we need to stock our D at least 8-9 deep with NHL-capable players.  Hopefully Jimbo has tired of that and is working to clean it up.

Maybe we just don’t qualify Hutton, sign Nemeth, and save 3 million off the cap?

I would rather have Jordie Benn, 6'2 has nasty side avg 18 mins per game? UFA local boy maybe home town discount?

Who woulda thunk you need nhl caliber dmen that can play a season?

Nemeth is a VERY good skater but doesn't rush much.   He is a good defensive version of Alex Edler (hits like Alex) but is not going to get you points.   He is a PK specialist as well.   Very strong underlying stats.   Not sure Colorado will not put up a fight to keep him though as he was relied upon a lot down the stretch and often did step up the line up when called upon.   He would be a defensive zone upgrade considerably over Hutton but no where near the offensive upside.

This likely spells the end of Hutton unless they plan on making Hughes a guy that comes in and out of the lineup depending on the opponent. Nemeth slots in against the bigger stronger opponents and Hughes slots in against the smaller more skilled ones. Hughes should play bottom pair for us at least to start the season, especially if we plan on making Schenn his d partner again. I love Schenn but his minutes should be limited to 10-15. Or maybe Benning/Greener want to try Hughes out on the right side? I'd see him working there better than Nemeth.

Interesting rumor. But if we do go for a bottom pair, left handed, defensive d-man would rather target Hainsey. Older, could be had on a shorter term deal, and possibly cheaper not that cap really matters the next couple seasons. Likely won't have a problem being a healthy scratch here and there and he's got that leadership edge to him.

He was a healthy scratch during the playoffs - played 7 of their 12 games.  They don't see him back next season with Timmins and Makar expected to make the team.  They still also have Graves.

Nemeth had pretty good 'possession' numbers this year  (31.5% ozone starts, 47.3% corsi)  - physical enough (2nd on the Avs in hits to Zadorov, 3rd in blocks) - decent depth D - but not sure why he'd be of particular interest.  Mayber a slightly heavier option as a partner for Stecher?

Dhaliwal seems to be hearing a lot of things that "could' be the case - soft qualifiers in most of the news lately.

They won’t let Hutton walk for nothing, they need defense depth, he had a good year with us and would have too much value as trade bait with cap strapped teams.

Hutton has arbitration rights this year so the Canucks would have to offer his same $3M salary to qualify him and then wait for Hutton to accept or go to arbitration. I believe they would have already made that offer were they interested in going to arbitration with him. I also believe this would make it more difficult for them to trade him as other teams will also know he is arbitration eligible.....doubt too many teams believe he is worth a minimum of $3M per year.

I honestly think we need to rotate 8 D to try to keep healthy and energy up. Use the NBA load management strategy

Having cheaper veteran depth like Nemeth and Schenn in the 6-8 slots lets you do that and insert them in games that a little more size might be needed.

After seeing the Raptors manage Kawhi and Lowry during the season, I started to wonder why NHL doesn't do this type of thing more. The top teams in the NHL should rest guys periodically and reduce their minutes.

We are not a top team so we probably have to give it all we got but it's a good idea. Tanev and Edler should get a game off every now and then and reduce his hard minutes to prevent injuries.

Nemeth was a healthy scratch in 5 of Colorado's 12 playoff games.

He also played in 7 of them.  And 74 games in the regular season.  We need some grit on the back.  Colorado had Zadorov hitting people through the glass so Nemeth wasn't necessary in every game.  We currently don't have a Zadorov on our team.

Surprised that I don't hear much chatter about UFA Ben Chiarot.  Seems like a good, big bodied stay-at-home defenseman who might play well partnered with someone like Stecher.

Good point. Nice big guy that can replace Hutton. I like it.

Big physical guy. Bottom pairing physical Dman. Not very good on offense side but does the hard things skilled D don't do..

Schenn replacement not Hutton replacement.

I'm guessing 2 yrs 2.5 mill per.  Hope JB doesn't  give him 4 yrs like with Beagle..

I am confused.

Nemeth is listed as left handed D-Man.

You are saying that Nemeth is an Schenn replacement.

Can Nemeth play the right side, too?

Why not only re-sign Schenn with the same conditions you mentioned (2y x 2.5. mill)?
