Italy and NY are dramatically different environments. Most people take public transportation, most people live in multi-family housing, most people have larger social networks, even absurdly simply things like smaller refrigerators have an impact on how frequently people leave the house to get groceries. In Italy it is very common to have Grandparents live with their children. You can definitely see how a younger person who is asymptomatic would have a high probability of killing an older individual in that case.. There is no possibility for this extensive of a spread in any of these smaller communities. There is no real surprise that Europe and NY are in trouble based of demographics and the inter-connectedness of their communities. Whats more compelling is why does a country like Japan and South Korea, who have similar characteristics to Europe and NY, have significantly fewer cases and deaths. I cant believe the fear and panic. Even in Italy almost all deaths are due to 60+ individuals with pre-existing conditions. We are still only talking about 12K dead on a population of 7,530,000,000 globally. Can we get some kind of perspective? 50% of the world will not get sick and hundreds of millions are not going to die. Quarantine the 60+ population with pre-existing conditions. Give them free food, money, the ability to test themselves and easy access to healthcare. Let the rest go about their lives. If the economy crashes, there will be a lot more people that will kill themselves due to suicide, hunger or other diseases that kill poor people. *Losing. If we're going to be experts, let's properly word things. You sound like my boss...rationalizing away the fact that we're all vulnerable and no one or place is immune - that dangerous thinking of yours is part of the problem. You need to understand the fear and panic as it's warranted. If most of the world is feeling it but you're not? I wonder who's got it wrong. You can hide your head because "money" and, in the end, this will take MUCH longer to address and be more of a burden than taking this seriously and acting with extreme measures for, hopefully, a shorter amount of time. This thing is for real...do what's necessary or let it completely blow up. Which do you think will cost us more in the end? Quote Can we get some kind of perspective? 50% of the world will not get sick and hundreds of millions are not going to die. Here's perspective. 2

He just wasn't following the guidelines and it was becoming far too stressful to try to manage it all as a result. Do or die thing, literally as I have hypertension and my blood pressure has shot up while working under the conditions. His open mouth coughing was sending me over the edge (he spent a month in Italy over Christmas and into mid January) and he was copping an attitude when I constantly reminded him of the basic guidelines in place. Should I even have to tell him to cover his damn mouth? Or to not hover over me at my desk?? Basically, he wanted to just do as little as possible to protect us instead of as much as possible. Sad. The people foot dragging and playing around with this are a ticking time bomb... I'm self isolating for two weeks because apparently he's had a meeting with a guy whose wife has it. Then the guy was sick...now my boss is trying to change the story to "they had the flu". How do you know? He is ignoring all the warning signs! The meeting was Feb. 21 and I learned of this last week...but he did nothing proactive in any of it. Our courier service called today to say they're shutting down for two weeks...a driver has it. Thank GOD I insisted on measures in our office last week that meant when he did our pick up I met him outside and did not let him in. Washed immediately afterward. My boss is also trying to rationalize why "it's ok" because only one guy has it. So why did they feel the need to call us and say they're shutting down then? I take that stuff seriously. He doesn't get the "that we know of" part in how this virus doesn't expose itself right away. He said I'm over reacting and I said we all should be. And left. Done. Sigh of relief that I don't have to contend with the Russian roulette at my workplace anymore. He's doing the minimal and it was only at my insistence (then he'd brag to clients about the measures in place...the ones I had to argue for). I told him I'd be back when it's safe...but not sure I want to work for him any longer in seeing this irresponsible attitude. Not a good time to job hunt so probably will go back in two weeks but ONLY in accordance with guidelines that are set out. Hopefully there'll be a shutdown in place because bosses like this aren't going to just give up their meal tickets without being forced to. You made the right choice. I just got home from my 14 day work stretch at 6am, I’m in full self isolation/preservation mode. From everything I saw this morning in the lower mainland, it’s the perfect ticking time bomb waiting to happen. I saw news footage of people playing sports games and at the beach. Meanwhile from what I hear, Canada’s trajectory looks the same as Italy’s was in the beginning? Why would anyone not sacrifice 2-3 weeks. At the rate of people’s stupidity that I’m seeing here we’ll be in lockdown for 6 months. Anyone who reads this and wasn’t sure what they should do, listen to me and follow Deb’s lead; STAY THE F*** HOME!!! 1 3 1

bishopshodan
I'm pretty glad I moved out of the city last November. Really proud of my former West End Neighbours for their diligence and 7pm cheers for the health workers. Not so proud of the footage of those that are being stupid F's and ignoring the warnings. 1 1

Popular Post wloutet
I'm an over 70 person staying at home. I am researching and writing a new Math course for BC students. I wonder what some 30 or some age person is doing at home. Is he/she learning, reading, doing something useful, or just crashing. A person earlier said that if I was needing a ventilator and a 30 something was needing a ventilator, it should be going to the 30 year old. Do you know what? I agree with them. I lost my wife recently and I do not fear death (I just get to see her again quicker), and the 30 year old has their whole life in front of them. Take my ventilator. Meanwhile I hope that I can finish this course before I'm out of here!! 6

The ego and attitude that some show in this is infuriating. This "all about me" beer pong mentality is scary...it couldn't wait? For a few weeks, maybe a month or two? Life will go on, just not for everyone. These asshats who don't care about that part need a visit from karma at some point to give them some perspective. Though I don't wish suffering on anyone. Endangering other people's lives isn't something to take lightly....but some seem to. I wish you the very best in this. You matter. It just confirms that I made the right decision...hearing something like this. Whether I have a job to go back to or not. I couldn't live with myself in a situation that was trying to stifle my moral being for a paycheque. One of the worst mistakes society made early on was pushing the whole narrative that young people will be fine instead of the narrative of exponential spread from asymptomatic carriers. Don't mean to put the blame on anyone in particular as there is so little data in a novel pandemic like this. Maybe I'm naive but I just don't want to believe that a lot of the younger folks out and about in groups are selfish and/or without empathy. I really, really wish that it's just a case of them not being educated on the threat of asymptomatic carriers and will smarten up as the narrative continues to change this way. 1

Fan since 82
Well Boris Johnson has just locked down the UK: People can now only leave their homes for a very limited number of reasons and all non-essential shops and services have been ordered to close for at least three weeks. Police will have the powers to deal with anybody not complying.
