We don't do it anymore because once in a while, we might kill an innocent person. I don't see how this is any different. The thing about that is, there's so much more to transitioning than just surgery and all of it requires numerous levels of evaluation and approval to happen. So the odds a kid making it through that many levels of scrutiny, only for their gender identity to end up being a passing phase, is miniscule.
