someone says it every deadline day

"Sometimes the best moves you make are the moves you don't make"

The same is true July 1 (or when ever that day comes now)

Jim's mantra from day one has always been "Character Guys"

that is why we drafted Brisebois. 6 years after his draft he has played 9 NHL games

Looking back at Jim's first draft, 2014, one wonders what is Jims criterion for "Character Guys"

Looking at Loui the Lump still hanging around one wonders some more what does Jim actually mean when he says "Character Guys"

Sure you have to make moves

Jim is paid to make the right moves

Funny the ages between 18 and 24. I was probably more responsible and had more character at 18 the 24. Didn’t really grow up till I was 27 lmao.

Brisebois is what a 3rd round pick?

My point wasn't to go from pick to pick

15 players drafted after Brisebois have played 100 games, 2 just won the cup.

the point was, you have to male the right moves

Jim is the one who emphisizes "Character Guy"

but his list of misses keeps growing to the point that I do not think a definition of "Character Guy" is still possible

Hmmm

Stevey Y is a genius smooch smooch.

Okay, but Stevey Y wants to move on from this player.

Let's give up two former first rounders and another pick for a 2nd rounder that the genius Stevey Y doesn't want anymore. Impeccable logic.

If it is Stevie Y, just look at what he is doing in Detroit but the twins will shut it down.   With JB we are living through it and the NMC would not make it possible.   If the (Gillis') NMC was not there, good chance Yzerman will try to expedite his rebuild by shopping them - just look at what he is doing in Detroit by selling off Larkin (a young asset that could had been part of his young core).

If the Twins were miraculously traded, the team would have had no choice but to do a real rebuild and not a bunch of retools by spending to the cap every year; and I get it cause it takes the support of ownership & (to a lesser degree) the fans for Yzerman to successfully implement his version of a rebuild.

So what do you see as Stevie's game plan selling off young vets?

Did you mean Larkin or Bertuzzi?

I see a coupel of possiblities

1 there is something about Beretuzzi he does not like

2 he thinks the injury will lower Bertuzzi's value in the future

either way, now is a good time to sell high

what is your take?

3 they went to contract arbitration last year and thing got ugly.

4. They wanted to give younger players a shot at cracking the top 6 like Rasmussen and raymond. Vrana panned out well too.

That’s funny. I thought the list of misses was shrinking.

What would be the cost here?

Hes an RFA probably looking to get paid 4-5 mil I would think.

Capable 20 goal scoring 50 point guy who plays with an edge. Would complement Horvat perfectly and he’s the nephew of a fan favourite.

I would do the 2nd and a prospect.

DiPietro and the 40th overall? Throw in Virtanen at 50% retained.

doesn't that make 1 and 3  the same then?

I'm pretty sure Detroit has the cap space to take on Jake's full contract.

Imagine the uproar though if Jake went to Detroit and became a 30 goal scorer in the top 6 and Bertuzzi has to retire in 2 years due to back problems?  And then to make matters worse DiPietro turns into a legit starting NHL goalie and Yzerman drafts a top 4 defenceman with the 2nd round pick.

This is the problem with trading young assets and picks for players over the age of 25.  The Mantha trade is a good example.  That's going to look really bad in 2-3 years.

I'm on board with the Bertuzzi trade but it is something that could backfire on Benning big time and our fan base will never let it go...

It would be cheaper to buy him out and we’d have a lower cap hit than retaining 50%.

(That’s if I’m using Capfriendly’s buyout calculator correctly.)

I'm not giving up DiPietro alone for Bert. 40 I would consider depending on the extension, and well Virtanen, they can have for free lol

Keep Jake and buy him out; it’s cheaper.

Risky giving up Dipietro for a guy coming off serious back surgery, no?  Mini Bert might not be the same player after his surgery. Very risky.
