Brandon Sutter | #20 | C

Say what you want about trading Sutter but he is a staple on our 3rd line. I wonder what our records like with and without him because he brings so much, and will be key in the playoffs in the matchup game where other 3rd lines have to try and score and defend a trio of Sutter, Gaudette and possibly even Virtanen/Ferland.

That Schaller goal was a beautiful rush by Sutter too, he's still got great offensive IQ.

He has been on the 4th since returning from injury. Sutter is a smart player with experience. He can be moved up the lines as well. The 4th line has been playing well enough that they can take some TOI off the 1st & 2nd which will be a bonus come playoffs. EP40 is not playing + 20 TOI games as much as last year. Goota help down the stretch.

For me it was never a question of Sutter's ability.  Clearly he is a talented player in pretty much every situation on the ice, anyone can see that if they watch the games.

The problem is after so many heavy minutes his body appears to be disintegrating around him, which is sad because he is a strong player on both sides of the puck and i'm guessing he is also an influential voice in the room.

Hope the best for him but i'm a cynic at heart and i'd say the injuries continue on for his tenure with the club.

I kinda agree. A option would be to move Sutter up on Bo's line and drop Ericksson down. Sutter hits the net more than 21 does.

Loui is not quick enough, but Sutter is even slower.  Neither on Bo’s Wing is an option.  Bo deserves a winger who drives play with the puck.

Sutter has more astute offensive instincts than Loui. While Sutter may not be super fast, he actually has some good hands in tight and some offensive hockey sense, despite being more of a defensive specialist.

Sutter is slow, and terribly soft.  Bo needs a player who (if he’s going to be soft) can carry the puck at speed and make plays.  Baer comes to mind, as does Goldy.

Get over it Alf, Baer and Goldy are never coming back. Just imagine how those two boys will feel if the TDL passes and they are still in Utica.

To be totally honest, I'd prefer to keep Brandon Sutter over Beagle.  Only reluctant thought is whether Brandon Sutter can remain healthy.  Offensively he has better ability to role out to play a four line game and still sustain some type of offense.  With Beagle, the offense just dies but he is a better faceoff man then Sutter.

Overall moving into next season, If we are given a compliance buyout to use on Loui, wonder if a team is willing to bite on Beagle deal.

Personally I feel Beagle has been a lot better on D and on the PK than Sutter. Offense dies with both players, more so with Beagle, but whoever is playing on the 4th line C is gonna be used 90% of the time defensively and Beagle fits that bill better. Gaudette is gonna have to start being used defensively, Virtanen maybe too, in secondary checking roles.

Also Beagle has an immense amount of playoff experience Success/Failures. The perspective he can give when we're down in a series or up if we make it the next few seasons will help out our young team.

Also Beagle's signed for another season where we need a solid 4th line C still. They're gonna be a stop gap for Gaudettes defensive development and even after we are gonna need a solid 4th line C.

Sure hope we can unload Sutter this summer in trade? Think it will be tough with salary cap 2021 season and Sutter 1 yr x 4.3 million remaining

He expires next season anyway. I doubt we gut our C depth that season for one piddly year when we have other places to clear cap and there will be some other mechanisms to bring cap in line with covid reduced revenue.

Disliking a player's contract does not mean to dislike the player. Sutter does help the team win when he is in the line up. He kills penalties, he can help out with faceoffs, and he can chip in with some goals here and there. He is also a leader and well-liked by the guys in the locker-room. Don't underestimate the aspect of a good guy in the room, because no one wants to share a lockerroom with someone like a Brendan Leipsic. Is he overpaid for what he brings? Yes. Is he completely useless like some of t he posters here suggests? Definitely not. We win more games with Sutter in the line-up than we do without. With only 1 year remaining on his contract, I can see teams who want to reach the Salary floor take him off our hands, or I could also see the team ride him out until the end of his contract because there is only 1 year remaining in it.

Agreed.  If we're shedding someone I'd rather we lose either Beagle or Ferland up front.

Jay has his role as a defensive/ face-off center, but given how Bo and Miller have developed in that regard, and Sutter can also kill penalties, I'd rather not keep a guy with term and on whose stick offensive plays come to die.  Sutter for one year of 4th line center is palatable, and I think there's versatility with him in that I wouldn't mind him on the 3rd line flanking Gaudette and Jake since he's also pretty north-south, and maybe MacEwen could hold down the fort on the 4th line?  That A on his chest would also likely mean that he would be able to help mentor the young guns which adds value.

Ferland on the other hand just seems like damaged goods since he arrived, and while people argue that he has value for the playoffs, I don't see how he could last many games without going down in Round 1, Game 1 in the first period, let alone really help the team that way.  The team's also got more size and toughness than it used to (Miller, Pearson, Virtanen, Roussel, MacEwen, Bo up front, and even Pete and Gaudette are pretty feisty guys).

Sutter can't be making 4.375 mill to be our 4th line centre  plus we have beagle who's 1.375 mill cheaper and better at face-offs.  Benning needs to find a good 4th line centre  in 2 yrs that's young jasek or focht maybe the answer??? possibly  but I say they will look for gems in 3rd round this yr art draft
