Watched KHL Kunlun Red Star highlights (they're the team that the Chinese Olympic team wants to borrow players to play for them in the Olympics), and wow SKA (that's Vey and Gusev's team) beat them 7-0 last month. Wonder how they'll even survive a period against NHL talent (they're also 8-23 with a -50 goal differential).
-
Yeah, it's been a trainwreck for them. Kunlun didn't even play in China last year. They played in some random city in Russia because of Covid.
The Spittin Chiclets episode with former NHLer (and current Red Star) Brandon Yip kind of gives insight into what's happening there. Kunlan is basically trying to sign every hockey player of Chinese descent that's played in the CHL/NCAA/Minors/Europe to get an Olympic team together. A funny story in the Spittin Chiclets episode is how Kunlan signed a guy who played for the UBC Thunderbirds and did some time in the OHL who had graduated from UBC and was working in finance for a year and basically made the jump from beer league hockey to the KHL. I think he's still on the team and his name is Luke Lockhart. And yeah, just other stories like that assembling this team.
It's gonna be a long process but if China can develop some long term NHL level talent, it'll be a win for them -- though Japan seems more poised to do that first.
Kunlan does have a few intriguing players on it. Tyler Wong was the kid who scored the hat trick against the Canucks in Vegas's first preseason game ever. Brandon Yip, Victor Bartley, and Spencer Foo all played NHL games before going to Kunlan... though none of them played up the lineup for any extended period of time in the NHL. There's also a couple of interesting former top prospects like Cliff Pu and Parker Foo who seem to be playing in Kunlan for the chance to play in the Olympics.
But yeah, I totally expect China's Olympic Team to be destroyed.

Fun fact, Vejmelka and Wedgewood in Arizona have better save % and GAA's than Demko and Halak.

@Mustard Tiger yeah, we'd probably lose if we played them now... RIP

@Heretic agreed, that would be a heresy!

@Phil_314 i should wear a bag around my head.

If you were the GM, what would be the core roster guys that you'd build around and refuse to trade moving forward?
I'm thinking Demko, Hoglander (not the most skilled but he's a leader with his work ethic), Horvat, OEL (I like Podkolzin and Garland too and would have a big ask but the consistency isn't there). -
Garland's making a case to climb my list of favorite Canucks; love the little things he does, the hustle and the talent. Go midget go!

Wow, Morgan Geekie with the funny last name but legit snipe, high glove on Robin Lehner.

Sutter suffering injury is like rain as part of Vancouver's weather: you don't know when it happens but when it does it's bad

Lol, Lord Loui's name gets autocorrected; but how do I show my appreciation for Sony Player Name cellphones or Joel Player Name Ek?

Never knew filler words were such a pet peeve of mine...

Hypothetical, if you guys were pro hockey players and got a Coyotes or Sabres PTO, would you take it, if your only other option was to potentially play overseas?
(Reminds me of the narrative where guys on waivers had a fire lit under them, or the same from being the guys exposed in Expansion Drafts e.g. Vegas' original guys rallied around that, but I'd think that it'd be borderline insulting to get that from a tire fire team, and moreso if I got waived). Curious to hear your thoughts. -
Who's everyone's early pick for unsung hero for the Canucks in the upcoming season?

@Bure_Pavel Hoggy would be huge. If he drops down to 3rd line then I would be happy with even a 30 point season, but more important then points will be his overall game. He could form a great posession line with Dickinson and Highmore/Podkolzin that we can throw out there against one of the other team's top two lines.
If he's given a chance with Bo and Garland, then I'd expect a few more points out of him. -
@hammertime his 50th goal next season will be commemorated with a custom The Flow t-shirt

Just watched the Demon Slayer movie after finishing the first season. WOW. That ending gave me Endgame feels *phew*.

@Where's Wellwood I love Homura (the end credits song) now, but it wouldn't have had the same effect without the context of the plot. I heard the song before watching the movie but it just doesn't hit the same way IMO.
-
@Dazzle the first half watches like an extended episode, but the second half it goes into overdrive. Of course don't skip to it since it is canon, but well worth the watch after the season.

Anyone catch JB's presser for Free Agency?

It was good. 650 has it on their site. Benning did an interview on 650 too. Both are a good listen.

Quite impressed by Caufield's performance recently (and I doubt I'm the only one), he's got quite the sick set of mitts. Sure hope that Podkolzin could make a comparable impact in his rookie season, even in a more well-rounded sense.

Props to McDonalds for jumping on the hype, turning regular McNuggets, fries and a coke into a "BTS Meal" (for those who aren't familiar, it's the most popular Korean pop boyband). Way to ride the hype train and get fangirls to pick up their purple colored boxes and paper bags en masse.

@Petey_BOI celebrities sponsoring foods in Korea is super common, and now that they're so famous worldwide it's a partnership full of potential. @Aladeen race you to the dumpsters, because one man's trash is another's treasure!

Can't wait to see who Benning buys out this off-season,
Eriksson's saves $2 million
Roussel's saves $1.26 million
Beagle's (might not be worth) saves $800k
Holtby saves $3.8 million(!!)
Virtanen saves $2.5 million(!)
That's nearly $9.5 million there -
Just read that Roberto Alomar got let go from the Blue Jays for ALLEGATIONS. Not even substantiated assault (while I'm not condoning assault, there needs to be reforms such that accusations alone before investigation shouldn't be enough to wreck a man's livelihood, esp. women like Amber Heard still get to "insist" to keep their role).

Bringing back a "game"/ discussion, Sign 2, Trade 2, Waive 2. At their current contracts and stages in their careers, who are you assigning to each option and why?
Bobrovsky, Jeff Skinner, Erik Karlsson, Matt Murray, Ryan Johansen, Matt Duchene.-
Signing Karlsson and Murray, Waving Bob and Skinner. Trading Johansen and Duchene.
Karlsson and Murray have both won. Murray still relatively young and contract isn't awful compared to most. Karlsson could be good on a team where he doesn't have to play 28 minutes a night and risk injury. Bob and Skinner simply the poorest contract value. Johansen and Duchene maybe provide the best return but both those guys seem to be part of teams that don't get over the hump.

Looks like Trade Deadline came early... wonder if anything will even happen tomorrow?
-
Time to change the team's name for this season to the Vancouver Can-We-Just-Write-Off-This-Season's?

Jeff Skinner with the no-stick breakaway tonight... the kicker (pardon the pun) is that the Rangers came back to score; now I've truly seen it all #ohBuffalo

Rick Dhaliwal reporting that GM Benning is in negotiations to sign team ice scraper Devon "Bucket Boy" Whitter to an ELC and sees "top 6 caliber skating and potential in him". Rumors he plans to dress him ahead of Jake Virtanen and Zack MacEwen.
