On what planet is Gardiner's play in his own end acceptable?

Its not, its as bad as Ristolainen but we wouldn't have to give up assets. Ristolainen isn't going to be easy to trade for. You're looking at minimum a 1st and a prospect. Gardiner and Risto are offensive dmen that have below average defensive capabilities. The difference is one we get without giving assets.

He has a yr or so left in his deal?  JB needs to make hay this season and earn his new contract.  Drafted well, but need to get this team into the playoffs.

Ditto, this season and off season will certainly be an important one for the team and more so for him.

Gardiner's also not a righty, not as big, not as young and will require an albatross $7x7+ deal where as Risto is signed for a very reasonable $5.4X3.

There's value there potentially worth trading for.

Anything beyond three is definitely not a good deal

He'd get at least 6mill on a 4 yr deal as a UFA.  4 yrs at 5 mil with no expansion draft protection is a great deal for us.  Meyers or Gardiner are nowhere near as good and would have cost us 6x6 to replace Edler.

Would prefer 3 years instead of 4 years. Being available for Seattle was the biggest issue for me.

honest question -why does that matter? If we have cap issues in 3 years, he can always be bought out if Seattle doesn't claim him. All this was, was to give him market value but not hurt our cap. 20/3 = 6.7 mil which is pretty much where his fair value is, if not below. If his last year is bought out he signed for less than fair value as he won't get his entire salary. The guy did all of us fans, this city, his teammates a favor to stay here.

Alterntively, he's our depth dman in a cup run in 4 years, not a bad guy to have as your 7th man for injuries, even if he's 37. You usually need those types around

4 years or 3 years he's earned it, I don't get the complaints?? If he gets 4 years so be it, he's still a good defenseman and provides that much needed calming influence on the back end. There was no one in this UFA class we could replace what Edler brings to this team, not even close... We could trade for someone with potential but then we are giving up assets to do so. This is by far the better choice, no assets lost in trying to fill Edlers hole if he left the team.

Also, you think we're all relieved of the news. Imagine how all the young players on the team feel now that's he's back? Petey included! Thanks Edler, great team deal, I hope you retire as a Canuck!

I would still be ok with going after Myers if the price is right. Happy to have Eddy back. An added bonus is that this doesn't put pressure on JB to pursue Gardiner.

Signing Edler doesn't change the fact that they needed to sign Edler and add a dman.  If they move Tanev, they'd need to sign 2, imo.
