Its not, its as bad as Ristolainen but we wouldn't have to give up assets. Ristolainen isn't going to be easy to trade for. You're looking at minimum a 1st and a prospect. Gardiner and Risto are offensive dmen that have below average defensive capabilities. The difference is one we get without giving assets.

Drafted well, but need to get this team into the playoffs. Ditto, this season and off season will certainly be an important one for the team and more so for him. rychicken
4th year isn't ideal...if Edler is anything more than a 3rd pair guy at that point, the team will not be at the elite level they're aiming for...

Gardiner's also not a righty, not as big, not as young and will require an albatross $7x7+ deal where as Risto is signed for a very reasonable $5.4X3. There's value there potentially worth trading for. 1
Popular Post 18W-40C-6W
So where are all the JB haters now? 4 years (who cares if its not 3, are you and I paying it? No, we can expose him and a very reasonable team friendly cap hit. If he's useless in his last year you buy him out. And 5 mil is a material discount (helps our cap). So he took the same money over 4 years, big deal. Just shows he wanted to help us ensure there's money to build a winner. Kudo's to JB and hats off to Alex for showing he actually cares very deeply about this city and franchise, he had already earned our respect but make sure you 'angry because he didn't waive' fans, think about that. The guy is our defensive rock, can still play and loves that jersey as much as any one of us born in this city. Thank you Alex, lets hope Seattle just takes some junk from us and you retire a Canuck Edited June 19, 2019 by 18W-40C-6W 2 5

CanuckGAME
4x5 is a fair deal. You have to give to get. Edler gives up money and expansion exemption. Canucks gave up 1 extra year. If its 4x5...

Stelar
Would prefer 3 years instead of 4 years. Being available for Seattle was the biggest issue for me.

Meyers or Gardiner are nowhere near as good and would have cost us 6x6 to replace Edler. 1

Being available for Seattle was the biggest issue for me. honest question -why does that matter? If we have cap issues in 3 years, he can always be bought out if Seattle doesn't claim him. All this was, was to give him market value but not hurt our cap. 20/3 = 6.7 mil which is pretty much where his fair value is, if not below. If his last year is bought out he signed for less than fair value as he won't get his entire salary. The guy did all of us fans, this city, his teammates a favor to stay here. Alterntively, he's our depth dman in a cup run in 4 years, not a bad guy to have as your 7th man for injuries, even if he's 37. You usually need those types around Edited June 19, 2019 by 18W-40C-6W 1
Angry Goose
If leaving VAN was a major worry for Eddy im surprised he would push for 4 (if its a 4 year deal). Doubt Seattle would waste a pick on a guy that would be there 1 year.
Dekey Pete
Huge win if we get him signed. We don't have the defensive depth to lose Edler, love him or hate him.
ilduce39
3 years is obviously ideal, but that means 4 is pretty close to ideal. If the “worst case” scenario of 4x5.5 without expansion exemption is true it’s a solid deal. 1 1

I.Am.Ironman
I would still be ok with going after Myers if the price is right. Happy to have Eddy back. An added bonus is that this doesn't put pressure on JB to pursue Gardiner.
Attila Umbrus
4 years or 3 years he's earned it, I don't get the complaints?? If he gets 4 years so be it, he's still a good defenseman and provides that much needed calming influence on the back end. There was no one in this UFA class we could replace what Edler brings to this team, not even close... We could trade for someone with potential but then we are giving up assets to do so. This is by far the better choice, no assets lost in trying to fill Edlers hole if he left the team. Also, you think we're all relieved of the news. Imagine how all the young players on the team feel now that's he's back? Petey included! Thanks Edler, great team deal, I hope you retire as a Canuck!

If they move Tanev, they'd need to sign 2, imo.
